Docs Live Can Pull From Your Gmail, Drive and Chat While You Talk

Google has started rolling out three voice features across Workspace this week: Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live. The most consequential of the three is Docs Live, because dictating into a document is not all it does. Google says Docs Live will also pull material out of your Gmail, Drive and Chat while you talk.

Here is how Google describes what Docs Live is doing while you speak:

Just talk, and Docs Live handles the heavy lifting: organizing your thoughts, structuring your document, and — with your permission — pulling relevant details directly from your Gmail, Drive, Chat, and the broader web.

That permission clause is doing a lot of work. It is the difference between a dictation tool and an assistant with standing access to your mailbox and your work chats. Google’s post does not spell out what granting it looks like, or how you take it back.

Worth being clear about what is and is not known here. As of today Google has not published the consent screen, the scope, or whether permission is granted once per document or once per account. Until it does, the sensible assumption is that anything sitting in your Gmail or Chat is fair game for a draft you dictate out loud.

What Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live each do

Gmail Live is conversational search for your inbox. Instead of scrolling threads, you ask. Google’s own examples are asking for a flight’s gate number, or what is happening at your kid’s school this week. It scans the inbox and answers.

Docs Live is the drafting tool described above. Google positions it as a thought partner for reaching a first draft, structuring the document and refining tone as you speak.

Keep Live takes a spoken brain dump and turns it into structured lists and notes. It processes the stream in the background rather than transcribing it literally.

Google frames all three as Gemini Audio models, first previewed for Workspace at I/O earlier this year.

Who gets it, and what it costs

None of this is free. Google says the Gmail and Keep features are available to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, while Docs is limited to Pro and Ultra.

So Docs Live — the one with the cross-app reach — sits a tier above the other two. An AI Plus subscription gets you voice in Gmail and Keep but not in Docs. Google adds that all three are coming soon for Workspace business customers, without giving a date.

On timing, Google says the features are rolling out this week. Gmail Live is going out on Android and iOS in English worldwide. Google has not detailed platform availability for Keep Live and Docs Live in the same terms.

The pattern worth noticing

Voice input in Gmail, Docs and Keep is not new. What is new is that the capable version of it now requires a paid Google AI tier, and the most capable version requires the more expensive one. Each of these apps has been free for well over a decade. The useful additions to them increasingly arrive on the other side of a subscription, a shape we noted last week when Gemini 3.8 Flash landed for paying users only.

If you do subscribe, the practical advice is narrow. Treat the Docs Live permission prompt as a real decision rather than a dialog to dismiss. Granting an app conversational access to your inbox and your chat history for the sake of a faster first draft is a trade, and it is worth making deliberately.
