Your Discord Messages Could Appear in Google Search: How to Opt Out

Messages you post in public channels of Discord’s bigger communities could start appearing in Google and other web search results from mid-December 2026. The setting is on by default everywhere except six regions, so users in the US and India have to turn it off themselves. You can do that now under User Settings > Data and Privacy.

Discord announced the change in an October 27 blog post by Group Product Manager Kelsey Duncombe-Smith. It applies only to Discoverable Servers, of which Discord counts more than 63,000. These are established communities with 1,000 or more members. Each must also have existed for eight weeks or longer and pass Discord’s activity and safety checks.

What changes, and when

  • October 27: admin controls begin rolling out under Server Settings > Web Presence
  • November 16: every Discoverable Server gets a public Server Web Page, auto-created from its Server Profile if admins haven’t built one, plus automated Channel Summaries of active conversations
  • Mid-December: some public-channel messages start showing on Server Web Pages and in web search, rolling out gradually over a few weeks

Discord says usernames and avatars won’t appear next to messages on these pages. Private servers, DMs and group DMs stay private and aren’t part of the change. Messages sent before mid-December are excluded, whatever your setting.

Channels whose content may appear on the web will carry a label, so you can see that before you post. A pilot is already running with the NBA 2K, Rust and Dead by Daylight communities.

Discord’s search default depends on where you live

In the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, the member setting is off by default. Discord ties that to legal restrictions in those markets. Teen users are excluded entirely and can’t turn it on until they’re adults. For everyone else, Discord’s post is blunt:

Everywhere else, it’s on unless members turn it off.

Put simply, users get the protective default only where the law demands it. Someone in New York or Mumbai gets less privacy out of the box than someone in Berlin, in the same app and the same chat. Discord pitches the change as making answers easier to find. It’s also a growth play that turns community conversations into search traffic for Discord.

How to stop your Discord messages showing up in search

  1. Open Discord and go to User Settings.
  2. Select Data and Privacy.
  3. Find the Channel Messages member setting for Discoverable Servers and turn it off.

One setting covers channel messages in every Discoverable Server you belong to. Discord’s post doesn’t say whether the controls are in the mobile app. If you can’t find the setting on your phone, check Discord on desktop or the web.

Timing matters here. If you turn the setting off later, only messages sent after that point stay off the web. Messages you sent while it was on remain visible unless you delete them from Discord. Because nothing before mid-December is included, switching it off now covers everything you post from here on.

Your setting doesn’t cover Channel Summaries

There’s a gap worth knowing about. Channel Summaries on Server Web Pages are separate from the member setting, and Discord says they stay up unless admins turn them off. Opting out keeps your own messages off the web, but a summary of what your channel discusses can still appear.

Admins can pick which channels appear, or opt the whole server out, under Server Settings > Web Presence. If they change nothing, public channels stay on. It’s the same on-by-default pattern we saw with Gemini Notebook’s connected-app setting outside the EEA.
