YouTube Will Now Freeze Uploads on Channels It Suspects Are Hacked

YouTube will now temporarily freeze key features on channels it suspects have been hijacked. During the pause, nobody can upload videos or start a live stream on the channel. Thumbnail changes and making private videos public are blocked too.

YouTube says its security teams typically review a paused channel within 24 hours. Existing videos stay watchable in the meantime, and the channel’s monetization isn’t affected.

What YouTube’s hacked-channel pause blocks

The pause kicks in when YouTube detects unusual or unauthorized activity on a channel. These actions stay switched off until the review is done:

  • Uploading or updating videos and Shorts
  • Starting a live stream
  • Creating playlists or adding videos to them
  • Uploading custom thumbnails
  • Changing videos from private to unlisted or public

While features are temporarily paused, viewers can continue watching your existing videos and interact with your channel, and your monetization status will not be impacted.

That’s from the YouTube Team’s announcement on the YouTube Help Community forum this week.

Why YouTube is adding the pause

YouTube says hijackers try to lock owners out quickly, then upload unwanted videos or live streams. Android Authority links the change to crypto scam streams impersonating Elon Musk and MrBeast, run from hijacked channels.

For creators, the pause is a safety net that limits what a hijacker can do with a stolen channel. For viewers, it should mean fewer hacked channels broadcasting scams. The catch is that an automated check can also flag a legitimate owner, who then has to wait for review.

What to do if your channel is paused

  1. Open YouTube Studio and read the banner. It explains the pause, estimates the review time and lists recovery steps.
  2. Follow those steps to verify that you own the account. YouTube says access comes back right away once the owner is verified.

As general good practice, rather than a YouTube instruction, protect the Google account behind your channel with 2-Step Verification or a passkey. That makes a hijack harder to pull off in the first place.
