iPhone 18 Pro: Your Old Charger Probably Won’t Fast-Charge It

The iPhone 18 Pro’s fastest charging speed needs a specific kind of power adapter. It is not the one most buyers already own. According to Apple’s own spec page, the phone reaches its fastest wired charging speed only with a 60W-capable USB-C cable. It also needs a USB PD 3.1 (or better) power adapter that supports Adjustable Voltage Supply, or AVS. That combination gets the iPhone 18 Pro to 50 percent in around 15 minutes.

The catch is that a lot of higher-wattage chargers people already own do not meet that AVS requirement. Apple’s own 96W and 140W USB-C power adapters, sold for charging MacBooks, use an older USB Power Delivery spec without AVS. Gizmochina first flagged the gap after checking Apple’s spec sheet. It reports that plugging an iPhone 18 Pro into one of these MacBook chargers will not unlock the advertised 15-minute charge. That is true even though the adapter can output far more power than the phone needs. Apple’s page does not name specific incompatible chargers. That inference is Gizmochina’s own reading of the spec requirements, not a claim Apple has made.

What’s actually in the box, and what you need to buy

The iPhone 18 Pro ships with only a USB-C charge cable, no power adapter. That has been true since the iPhone 12. It matters more now, though, because the cable alone will not get you the phone’s fastest charging speed either. Apple’s own 40W Dynamic Power Adapter can peak at 60W and carries the required AVS support. Apple’s spec page implies this is the adapter that will actually deliver the 15-minute figure.

Buyers who plug in an older or third-party 45W USB-C charger without AVS support are not locked out of fast charging entirely. According to Gizmochina’s testing, the phone still charges quickly on those chargers. It just lands closer to last year’s iPhone 17 Pro rate, around 20 minutes for a 50 percent charge, instead of the 15 minutes AVS unlocks.

Apple’s spec page lists two other charging paths for anyone who does not want to hunt for a PD 3.1 adapter. A 35W-or-higher adapter paired with a MagSafe Charger reaches 50 percent in 30 minutes. MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging alone tops out at 25W.

Why this is worth knowing before you buy a charger

Apple not including a power adapter in the box already meant buyers had to source their own. Now, owning a high-wattage charger is no longer enough on its own. A 96W adapter that easily powers a MacBook Pro will charge an iPhone 18 Pro more slowly than Apple’s own $39, 40W Dynamic Power Adapter. That’s because wattage alone does not guarantee AVS support. Anyone assuming their existing charger drawer already covers the new iPhone should check for PD 3.1 and AVS specifically, not just a big wattage number on the box.
