Nothing OS 5.1 Will Let You Remap the Essential Key, Nothing Says

Nothing has said that Nothing OS 5.1 will let owners reassign the Essential Key, the dedicated hardware button that has so far been wired to a single Nothing service. The commitment comes from a long post on Nothing’s own community forum, written by a staffer who introduces himself as Dan and says he joined the company in January and is in charge of software for Nothing phones. In a section on what comes after the current release, he writes:

Nothing OS 5.1 will be a smaller release, but still with a few exciting changes. (We will finally be allowing users to remap the Essential Key, for example).

Why the Essential Key needed unlocking in the first place

The Essential Key is a dedicated hardware button on recent Nothing phones, tied to a Nothing service rather than to a user-chosen action. Android Authority reports that owners have had to reach for third-party automation apps to point it at anything else, and that official remapping has been one of the more common requests put to the company.

A dedicated hardware key wired to one first-party service is a product decision, not a technical limitation. Owners noticed. The workarounds people settled on, per the same report, were a camera shortcut or a flashlight toggle. Opening the key up officially is Nothing conceding the point.

It is worth being clear about what this does not change. Essential Space is still Nothing’s service, running on Nothing’s terms, and remapping the button does nothing about the captures you have already sent to it. What changes is that a piece of hardware you paid for stops being a permanent shortcut to a product you may not want.

The same post treats the design as Nothing’s failure, not the user’s

The Essential Key line sits inside a broader argument about the company’s own missteps. Explaining why Nothing built a separate Glyph app, the post says the company knows Essential Notifications takes users a long time to configure, and that some never work it out at all. It then calls that Nothing’s fault rather than theirs, which is not how most OEM communications describe a feature that shipped badly.

That framing is the useful part for buyers. Nothing is admitting it shipped features in a state users could not reasonably be expected to set up. The locked Essential Key belongs in the same category.

When you can expect it

Not soon. Nothing OS 5.0, the Android 17 release, is in open beta on the Phone (3), with the stable version reported by Android Authority as still weeks away. We covered which Nothing phones are in line for Nothing OS 5.0 when the device list appeared, and how to join the open beta the week enrolment opened.

Nothing OS 5.1 comes after all of that, and the forum post does not give a date or timeline for it. It says teams are only starting development on 5.1, while others are already looking ahead to Nothing OS 6.0 next year. Treat the remap as a stated commitment for a future release, not something you will be setting up this month.
