Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta Is Live on Phone (3): How to Join

The Nothing OS 5.0 open beta is now live for the Nothing Phone (3), and if you want in, there is a clock on it. Nothing’s own instructions state that “the Open Beta access channel will remain open for 7 days, after which new participation will close” — so this is not an enrolment you can sit on and think about for a fortnight. Here is what joining actually involves, what it does not erase, and what leaving costs you.

Check your build number before anything else

The step most people skip is the one that decides whether any of this works. Nothing’s Beta Hub only accepts devices already on a specific stable build — if you are behind, the beta will simply never appear, and you will assume the rollout has not reached you. Check the software version your phone reports in Settings and compare it against Nothing’s list.

  • Phone (3) — Metroid-V4.1-260814-1733
  • Phone (4a) Pro — FroggerPro-B4.1-260723-1820
  • Phone (4a) — Frogger-B4.1-260808-1352 or later
  • Phone (3a) Pro — Asteroids-B4.1-260810-1153
  • Phone (3a) — Asteroids-B4.1-260810-1153
  • Phone (2a) — Pacman-B4.1-260813-0941 or later
  • Phone (2a) Plus — PacmanPro-B4.1-260813-0941 or later
  • Phone (4b) — to be confirmed

Only the Phone (3) has an open beta running right now; the rest open on Nothing’s staggered schedule, which we covered in full in our Nothing OS 5.0 eligibility and rollout guide. The build numbers are worth noting in advance anyway, because updating to the required stable version is itself an OTA that takes time you may not have before enrolment closes.

How to join the Nothing OS 5.0 open beta

  1. Update your phone to the required stable build listed above, via Settings > System > System updates.
  2. Download and install the Nothing Beta Hub V2.0 APK from Nothing’s Nothing OS page. Nothing says older Beta Hub versions are no longer supported, so an app you installed for a previous beta will not do.
  3. Go to Settings > System > Nothing Beta Hub.
  4. Tap Check Version.
  5. Tap Join Beta to register.
  6. Once registered and the beta is available for your device, tap Go to Update. Nothing says the build can take up to five minutes to appear.

If Go to Update does nothing, Nothing’s advice is to go to Settings > System > System updates and check manually. And if a stable update shows up first, install that one — the beta follows behind it.

Getting back to stable erases your phone

This is the part to weigh before you tap Join Beta, and it is asymmetric in a way that is easy to miss. Joining the beta does not erase anything; Nothing’s own FAQ says plainly that installing the open beta will not wipe your data. Rolling back does. Nothing states that rolling back will erase all data on your phone, and the rollback flow asks you to confirm that you understand this before it proceeds.

The rollback process itself is at least less awkward than it used to be. Beta Hub V2.0 handles the downgrade as a system OTA rather than making you source a rollback package by hand: in Beta Hub you tap Check Version, then Request Rollback, and once the request succeeds you have a 48-hour window to tap Go to Rollback and install the downgrade. Miss the 48 hours and you request it again. The older Import File method is still there as a fallback.

One caution on Nothing’s own wording, because the page is not internally consistent about it. The FAQ says joining will not erase your data, but the warning block further up says installing beta software or rolling back may require a factory reset and could result in data loss. Those are two different promises about the same operation, and when a manufacturer hedges like that the sensible reading is the pessimistic one. Back up photos, contacts, messages and call logs first regardless of which sentence you believe.

What you will not get in the beta

Worth knowing before you commit a daily driver to pre-release software: two of the headline visual changes are not in this build. Nothing says the refreshed homescreen and the Micrographics clockface are still in development and arrive only with the general release from October. Essential Space’s MCP support is planned separately through Google Play around October, and the redesigned capture experience is slated for November.

You also do not need the beta to get the finished release. Nothing confirms that once the general release reaches your device, it arrives as a normal over-the-air update and you do not have to leave the beta first — which, given that leaving is the destructive direction, is the more relevant fact for most people. If you mainly want Nothing OS 5.0 rather than want to test it, waiting costs you nothing and saves you a wipe.
