Android 17’s Motion Assist Reaches Pixels With a Key Overlay Fix

Motion Assist, the Android 17 accessibility feature meant to reduce motion sickness when you use your phone in a moving car, has started reaching real devices — and the version that is shipping solves the problem that made earlier builds close to useless. The feature draws moving dots around the edges of the screen that track the vehicle’s motion, giving your inner ear and your eyes something to agree on. Earlier builds could only draw those dots over ordinary apps. The shipping version draws them over system UI too.

Why the Overlay Change Is the Real News

When the feature was first spotted in December 2024 under the name Motion Cues, it was built on Android’s “Display over other apps” permission — the same general-purpose overlay mechanism third-party apps use. That permission is deliberately fenced off from the parts of the interface Android protects against overlay attacks, so the motion dots could not appear over the Settings app, the status bar, notifications, Quick Settings, the lock screen or the volume panel.

For a feature whose entire purpose is to stay on screen continuously while you are in motion, that is a fatal gap. Pull down Quick Settings to change a song, glance at a notification, or unlock the phone, and the cues vanish at exactly the moment your eyes are being asked to re-fixate. According to Android Authority, which reports the rollout, Google addressed this with OS-level API changes made specifically for Motion Assist rather than by loosening the general overlay permission — so the dots now persist over system surfaces without opening that permission up for every app on the phone. That is the right way to build it, and it is worth noting given how often overlay permissions are abused by malware.

Where to Find It, and What You Can Change

Motion Assist lives in Google Play Settings rather than the main Android settings tree. The path is Settings > Your profile > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion Assist. Two controls matter most:

  • Automatic start: a toggle that turns the cues on by itself when the phone detects you are in a moving vehicle.
  • Quick Settings tile: an optional tile so you can switch it on and off manually without going through Settings.

Beyond that, you can change the colour, shape and opacity of the motion indicators, and there is a Randomization option that varies those settings automatically. While the feature is running, Android shows a persistent notification, and tapping it offers a shortcut to switch the cues back off.

Rollout: Pixel First, and Not Every Pixel

Availability is patchy even inside the Pixel line. Android Authority reports that the feature has appeared for some users but not others on Android 17 devices, including on Pixels of different generations running the same OS version. That is characteristic of a server-side staged rollout: there is no APK to sideload and no setting to force it. If Motion Assist is not in your Play Settings yet, keeping Google Play services current is the only thing that helps.

Google has not published a rollout schedule or a device list for Motion Assist, and there is no word yet on when it reaches non-Pixel Android 17 phones. Because it is delivered through Google Play services rather than an OEM system update, though, it does not depend on Samsung, Xiaomi or anyone else shipping an OTA first — which is the reason a feature like this has any chance of reaching phones outside Google’s own hardware within a reasonable timeframe.
