Custom Vibration Patterns Arrive on Pixel 11, Including Per Contact

Pixel 11 owners can now pick the vibration pattern their phone uses for calls and notifications, and — this is the genuinely new part — assign a different pattern to individual contacts, so you can tell who is calling from your pocket without looking. The system-wide half of that is documented on Google’s own Pixel Phone Help page. The per-contact half is not documented anywhere by Google that we could find.

What Google actually documents about Pixel vibration patterns

Google’s support page carries a section headed “Customise your ringtone’s vibration patterns and intensity”, and the steps it gives are: Settings > Sound and vibration > Ringtone > Vibration, then select a pattern, tap it to preview, and use a slider to adjust the intensity. It adds a tip that Android Authority’s write-up does not mention — tap Matches ringtone and the phone picks a vibration to suit the ringtone you chose, rather than making you audition them one by one.

Notifications get their own separate set at Settings > Sound and vibration > Notification Vibration, with the same preview-and-intensity behaviour.

That documentation is itself new. Archived copies of the same help page from April 2025 and January 2026 contain no vibration-pattern section at all — they document only “Change your ringtone” (via Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone, with no Vibration sub-item) and “Assign a ringtone to someone”. The pattern picker, the intensity slider and the Matches ringtone tip have all been added since, which lines up with the feature reaching shipping phones rather than living in app code.

Two further things stand out reading that page rather than the coverage. First, Google does not tie either of these steps to a device. That page is explicit about hardware limits elsewhere — adaptive alert vibration is labelled “(Pixel 6a)” and adaptive vibration “(Pixel 7 and later, including Fold)” — so the absence of any such tag on the vibration-pattern steps is notable, even if it is not a promise. Second, the page’s “Assign a ringtone to someone” instructions stop at choosing a ringtone. There is no per-contact vibration step in Google’s documentation at all.

The per-contact vibration is the part worth setting up

According to Android Authority, which spotted the feature live on the Pixel 11 series after first finding it in an APK teardown of Google’s Sounds app, the path is: open Contacts, select a contact, then tap Contact ringtone > Vibration. You get the same pattern list as the system ringtone setting.

This is a quietly excellent accessibility feature, and it is worth saying so plainly: it lets someone who is deaf or hard of hearing, or simply in a meeting with the phone face-down, distinguish a call from a partner or a child from a call from an unknown number without touching the device. Google has long documented assigning a ringtone to a contact; a per-contact vibration is the version of that idea that still works when sound is not an option.

The pattern names

Google’s help page does not list the patterns. Android Authority names Classic Long Vibration, Heartbeat and Gears among the ringtone options, and Classic Short Vibration, Rattlesnake and Pulse among the notification set, with more in each list. Its own description is that the patterns are aptly named — some short and sharp, others longer or more elaborate.

Whether older Pixels get it is not settled

Android Authority describes the features as exclusive to the Pixel 11 lineup for now, and says it is unclear whether Google plans to extend them to older Pixels in a future Pixel Drop. That is the outlet’s observation from testing, not a Google statement — Google has said nothing about which devices are eligible, and, as above, has not restricted the steps on its own support page to any model.

The practical advice, then: if you have a Pixel 11, both features are there now. If you have an older Pixel, walk the ringtone path (Settings > Sound and vibration > Ringtone > Vibration) and see for yourself, because Google’s documentation gives you no reason to assume it is absent. Do not expect the Contacts option on anything but a Pixel 11 yet. It is not the only Pixel 11 feature Google has shipped without saying whether older phones will get it — we noted the same pattern when Camera Looks stayed exclusive to the new lineup.
