Kindle Oasis Gets Its First Update in a Year: Hardened DRM

The Kindle Oasis 3 has just received its first software update in more than a year, and it adds nothing a reader would want. Firmware 5.18.2.1.1 pushes Amazon’s hardened DRM onto the 2019 e-reader, and it arrived with no mention in Amazon’s release notes at all. The Kindle Voyage is now the only supported Kindle left that still gets ebooks delivered without it.

What changed, and how to check your Oasis

The device in question is the Kindle Oasis 3, the tenth-generation model from 2019 — long discontinued, still widely used, and until this week running software from April 2025. Nathan Groezinger of The eBook Reader, who spotted the push, puts it plainly: “The new software version is 5.18.2.1.1, and the release notes don’t acknowledge its existence.” He notes the device “had been on 5.18.2 since April of 2025; this is the first update in over a year.”

To see which build you are on, check the device information screen in your Kindle’s Settings menu. If it reads 5.18.2.1.1, the change has already landed on your device.

The practical effect, as The eBook Reader reports it, is that DRM-removal tools no longer work on ebooks downloaded to the Oasis. On the state of play across the range: “Now the Kindle Voyage is the only (supported) Kindle that doesn’t get ebooks delivered with the new unbreakable (for now) DRM.”

Why this keeps happening to devices you already own

It is worth naming what an update like this actually is. Nothing was fixed for the owner. No feature was added. A capability that existed on a device someone paid for in 2019 was removed, silently, seven years later, on hardware Amazon no longer sells. If that pattern feels familiar, it should — Amazon removed the USB download-and-transfer option earlier this year and ended support for the first five Kindle generations in May, and we covered how a recent Kindle update closed the airplane-mode trick for expired Libby loans.

Amazon has said nothing about this particular firmware, which is the part that ought to bother people most. An undocumented update that changes what you can do with books you have bought is a change to the terms of a purchase, delivered without notice, to a device sitting on your bedside table. Whatever the merits of protecting authors’ work from piracy — and they are real — the mechanism here is a company quietly reaching into hardware you own.

Groezinger’s own reading is that Kindle Unlimited is the motivation, since authors in that programme are paid per page read and Amazon has an obligation to keep those titles secure. That is his analysis rather than a company statement, but it is a plausible one.

What you can actually do

  • Nothing reverses it. There is no supported way to roll a Kindle back to an earlier firmware.
  • The change concerns delivery. The eBook Reader describes the hardened DRM as applying to ebooks downloaded to the device, and reports no effect on files already sideloaded onto it.
  • If a DRM-free library matters to you, that decision now has to be made at purchase. Buying from stores that sell unrestricted EPUB files, or borrowing through a library app, keeps your options open in a way a Kindle purchase increasingly does not.

Amazon has not commented on the update, and the version number here is verified by e-reader outlets rather than by Amazon’s own documentation — the company’s Kindle software page does not describe what 5.18.2.1.1 does.
