The Tensor G6 inside the Pixel 11 series is built on TSMC’s 3nm process, not the 2nm node that had been reported for months ahead of the launch. The correction comes from Google’s own VP of hardware, Peng Yu-chun, who gave the figure to Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) at the Pixel 11’s Taiwan launch.

What the Tensor G6 Node Change Means
The pre-launch story was that Google had jumped the queue: that the Tensor G6 would be the first phone chip fabricated on TSMC’s 2nm process, ahead of Apple, which normally gets first call on a new TSMC node. Google never said this itself. It came from supply-chain reporting that ran from late last year through the Pixel 11 announcement, and it was repeated widely enough that most people took it as settled.
It was not. A 3nm Tensor G6 means the chip sits on the same generation of process technology as the Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10. That matters mostly for one thing: efficiency. Shrinking a node is the cheapest way to buy battery life and sustained performance without changing the design, and it is the upgrade a lot of Pixel owners were quietly hoping for after years of Tensor chips running warm. Staying on 3nm does not mean the G6 is no better than the G5 — architectural changes and a more mature version of a node both count — but the automatic efficiency win people were expecting is not there.
Worth separating out, because the reporting got tangled: the Tensor G6 was never going to be the first 2nm phone chip in any case. Samsung’s Exynos 2600 already holds that title. The claim only ever concerned TSMC’s 2nm line, and now it does not apply at all.
What Google Actually Claims for the Tensor G6
The Tensor G6 upgrades 9to5Google lists as Google’s own touted figures carry no process-node number at all. They are these, and all of them are the company’s own figures with no independent testing behind them yet:
- CPU — Google cites “25% faster web browsing, 15% quicker app launches”
- TPU — 50% more compute than the previous generation, and support for a new on-device Gemini Nano model
- Image processing — an upgraded ISP, with faster Night Sight and longer-reach digital zoom
- Security — an upgraded Titan M3 security chip
Notice what is missing from that list: any battery or thermal claim. For a chip generation where the loudest expectation was efficiency, Google leading on browsing speed and app launch times rather than endurance now reads differently than it did last week.
What to Do With This
Nothing about the Pixel 11 has changed — the phone is the phone it was at launch, and a node number on a spec sheet is not something you experience. But if you were holding a pre-order specifically because you expected a 2nm Tensor to fix Tensor’s long-standing battery and heat reputation, that particular reason no longer stands, and it is worth waiting for real-world battery testing before committing. Google has not published a correction of its own, and it never made the 2nm claim to correct.
