Pixel 11 Pro Drops to 12GB RAM While Costing $100 More

The Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL ship with 12GB of RAM as standard, down from the 16GB that came as standard on the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL. They also cost $100 more than the phones they replace. Less memory, more money, in the same generation, is an unusual thing for a flagship to do, and Google has an explanation on the record for why it happened.

What the Pixel 11 RAM cut actually changes

On the Pixel 10 generation, 16GB was the floor on the Pro models — every configuration got it. On the Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL, 12GB is the floor, and 16GB is something you move up to by buying a higher storage tier. The base Pixel 11 stays at 12GB, unchanged from the Pixel 10, so the cut is specific to the Pro line. Google’s own store listing reflects this by advertising “Up to 16 GB RAM” on the Pro models rather than a single figure, which is the kind of phrasing worth reading carefully before you click buy.

There is a genuine sweetener alongside it. The Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro both now start at 256GB of storage, double the 128GB entry tier of the previous generation. If you were going to pay for the 256GB model anyway, the storage bump absorbs part of the price rise. If you were happy at 128GB and wanted the memory headroom instead, the trade has gone the wrong way for you.

Every Pixel 11 costs $100 more

The increase is uniform across the line rather than concentrated on one model:

  • Pixel 11: $899
  • Pixel 11 Pro: $1,099
  • Pixel 11 Pro XL: $1,299
  • Pixel 11 Pro Fold: $1,899
  • Pixel Watch 5: $399, a $50 rise

Each phone is $100 above its Pixel 10 counterpart. Our full Pixel 11 pricing and specifications rundown covers the India listings and the launch offers.

Google’s explanation: memory prices

Speaking to 9to5Google in late July, before the phones were announced, Google’s Vice President of Devices and Services, Shakil Barkat, pointed at the memory market. Citing Morgan Stanley figures, he put the cost of RAM at $2.80 per gigabyte in 2025 and $12 per gigabyte in 2026 — a rise of more than four times in a year, driven by AI datacentre demand soaking up supply.

“there’s never been an increase in memory prices like the world’s going through right now”

Barkat also told the outlet that Google had “shielded our consumers from supply fluctuations for as long as possible” and that the “economics have fundamentally shifted and we’re not immune to that.” Those remarks were made in July; the August launch is what confirmed the outcome. He described a “dedicated effort” to reduce memory requirements across Android and the app ecosystem to “enable devices to have less RAM while maintaining a great user experience.”

What it means if you are buying one

The component-cost pressure is real and it is not Google’s invention — the same squeeze has been pushing prices up across the industry, and Android makers with thinner margins are absorbing it worse. But two things are worth naming plainly. First, on-device AI is the feature Google is selling hardest, and on-device AI is exactly what benefits from headroom; 12GB is a leaner base for a phone Google intends to keep updated for seven years than 16GB was. Second, “up to 16GB” moves memory from a guaranteed Pro-tier specification to an upsell tied to storage you may not need. If you want the 16GB configuration that used to be the default, check the exact variant before ordering rather than assuming the Pro badge covers it.
