Meta Pauses Smart Glasses Paywall, But Hasn’t Ruled It Out

Meta has paused its plan to put a usage cap on conversation focus, the hearing-assist feature on its Meta smart glasses, after a wave of criticism. The company told The Verge it is halting the “subscription test” and will keep the feature free through its Early Access Program while it works out “a better approach.” What it has not done is scrap the idea.

What Meta was going to charge for

Conversation focus uses the glasses’ beamforming microphones to cut background noise and make the person in front of you easier to hear — in a loud restaurant, on a busy street, at a family gathering. For a lot of owners with mild hearing loss, it is the single most useful thing the hardware does.

Under the plan Meta floated earlier this month, free users would have been limited to three hours of conversation focus per month. Paying $19.99 a month for Meta One would have raised that ceiling to 15 hours a month. That is roughly six minutes a day for free, or half an hour a day for $240 a year.

The reason the backlash landed so hard is that conversation focus runs entirely on the glasses. There is no server cost to recover, no cloud inference bill — the feature keeps working with no internet connection at all. Metering it is a business decision, not an infrastructure one.

Meta’s own words say the paywall is coming back

Meta spokesperson Tyler Yee told The Verge:

We sell hardware at accessible prices to get AI glasses into the hands of as many people as possible and they pack a lot of value for free, so some premium features will be subscription-based over time. Charging power users for expanded use of premium features is how we sustain this strategy and keep investing in breakthrough capabilities.

Read that carefully. Meta is not saying the cap was a mistake; it is saying subsidised hardware has to be paid for somewhere, and subscriptions are the plan. The word doing the heavy lifting is “pause.” Yee did add that not every premium feature will sit behind a subscription, which is something — but the direction of travel is clear enough.

Why this matters beyond Meta

This is the smart glasses category’s first real test of a pattern Android buyers already know from cars, TVs and printers: hardware sold cheap, capabilities rented back. Conversation focus is a hearing accessibility feature. Rate-limiting it means someone who relies on it to follow a conversation loses that help partway through the month unless they pay — and that is a materially different thing from throttling a novelty AI trick.

If you own a pair, nothing changes today. If you are shopping for smart glasses, the question worth asking of every vendor — Meta, and the Android XR glasses Samsung is preparing — is which advertised features are permanent and which are on loan. That answer belongs on the box, before the sale, not in a policy update eight months later.
