Galaxy Z Fold 8, Flip 8 Rated for 40% Fewer Charge Cycles

Samsung’s new foldables ship with a battery downgrade the company did not mention on stage. Official energy labels for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8 rate all three for just 1,200 charge cycles before their batteries drop to 80% of original capacity — a 40% cut from the 2,000-cycle rating carried by last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.

The figures come from the European Union’s EPREL database, the official repository where manufacturers must publish energy and durability data for every device sold in the bloc. This isn’t a leak or an estimate; it’s Samsung’s own filed rating.

What a 1,200-cycle rating actually means for the Galaxy Z Fold 8

A charge cycle is one full 0-to-100% top-up (two half-charges count as one). The rating tells you how many cycles a battery can take before it permanently loses 20% of its capacity. At 2,000 cycles, a phone charged once a day crosses that threshold after roughly five and a half years. At 1,200 cycles, it gets there in about three years — well within the window many people keep an expensive foldable, and squarely inside the seven years of software updates Samsung now promises these phones.

Why the cycle life dropped: silicon-carbon batteries

The cause is the switch to silicon-carbon battery chemistry, which Samsung is using in a foldable for the first time. Silicon-carbon packs more capacity into the same physical space, and Samsung markets it as the reason the Fold 8 can be thinner while carrying a bigger cell. That benefit is real. The cost, which the marketing skips, is that silicon-carbon cells degrade faster than the conventional lithium-ion packs they replace — hence the lower cycle rating.

The impact is uneven across the lineup. The Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra at least gained battery capacity in the trade, softening the blow. The Z Flip 8 got no capacity increase at all, so it carries the shorter lifespan with nothing to show for it. By the numbers, a Z Flip 8 that starts at 4,300mAh would effectively behave like a roughly 3,440mAh phone after 1,200 cycles — a level the Z Flip 7 wouldn’t reach for around five years.

What buyers should weigh

None of this makes the batteries defective, and heavy fast-charging or heat matters as much as raw cycle counts in the real world. But if you buy a foldable expecting to keep it for the full support life, this is a concrete reason to budget for a battery replacement earlier than you would have on the Z7 generation — and a reminder that “thinner and bigger” carried a quiet compromise. Our full breakdown of the hardware is in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra launch coverage.
