Super Stickman Golf 3 hands-on: A first look at the new game

Noodlecake Studios will be officially launching Super Stickman Golf 3 tomorrow. But the good folks at the Canadian studio, sent us a copy of the game for review, and we are quite impressed with the changes.

Super StickMan Golf 3 UI

Here is your first look at Super Stickman Golf 3.

On first glance, the game does appear very similar to its predecessor, Super Stickman Golf 2. SSG3, also features special golfer characters, ball trails, and hats. There are 20 courses in the game with all new powerups.

The new addition, is in terms of the gameplay itself. Firstly, you have the option to choose between two-tap and three-tap controls. In earlier versions of the game, you had to shoot the ball by holding the shot button, wait for the meter to fill up and then lift your finger to shoot. Now you can tap on the shot button, lift your finger, wait for the meter to fill up, and then tap on it to shoot. It does offer better controls.

Just after playing a shot, you can add some spin to the ball, by dragging the spin meter on the right. This might help you on tricky surfaces.

Another new addition to the game, is cards. You win cards by playing the game, and also by purchasing IAPs, which are completely optional. Cards may give you various hats, ball trails, and even new powerups. You can earn Golf Bux, and buy cards using that too. Some cards can be leveled up, for a greater effect.

Then there is the new Race mode, which is a multiplayer mode, where you can challenge players, and a turn based multiplayer mode as well. Both are played using Google Play Games, and are asynchronous (not real time). There is a cameo by Flappy Golf, a fun new Beach Ball mode which turns the ball into a lighter one, which floats, and the unlimited Nitro mode, as the name suggests, lets you play with full power shots.

Super StickMan Golf 3 Multiplayer

You can play daily races, which are sort of daily challenges to win Golf Bux and Cards. There are hidden secrets on some holes, but I’m yet to find one.

The IAPs in Super Stickman Golf 3 are pretty decent.  For example the premium version of the game ($2.99) provides access to all downloadable courses (5 at the moment), removes ads, gives you 5 bonus card packs, unlocks unlimited daily races (free limit is 5 per day), and 25 simultaneous turn based matches.

There are optional IAPs to buy cards and XP, and these are a bit pricey, but as we mentioned earlier, these can be earned through normal gameplay, and are completely optional. We feel that Noodlecake has done things right with the free to play model of Super Stickman Golf 3.

Here is a look at my scorecard, and the spoils I got from it.
