Android Marshmallow now runs on 2.3% of devices

Google has published the latest Android Distribution Numbers for the week ending March 7, 2016.

Android Distribution Numbers February 2016

And the results are not good at all.

Android Marshmallow now runs on 2.3% of devices. Yes, the latest version of the operating system which was launched in October, is lagging behind severely, even after four months of making its debut.

In comparison,  iOS 9 which was released in September 2015, has a 77% user count, as of February 2016. This shows how badly the fragmentation problem is affecting Android users. It is only the Nexus devices which get the latest version of Android first, followed by a few mid range devices, while even flagship devices are stuck behind with Lollipop.

Back to the main story, Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop together hold a percentage of 36.1, and is followed by Android KitKat with 34.3%. The last major share holder is Android Jelly Bean with 22.3%.

Hilariously, Gingerbread has more users than Marshmallow, with 2.6%, while Ice Cream Sandwich has the same number as Android 6.0, with 2.3%.

Whether we will we ever see this fragmentation problem end, is a different story.
