AwSMS, the free SMS and MMS app for Android devices, is now available on Google Play in a Public Beta.
The app was previously in private beta (on Google+).
Personally, I prefer QKSMS, which is free and open-source. But we decided to give AwSMS a try, and it is quite good.The quick reply option is indeed excellent, and does not bring up a window like QKSMS (and Textra) do. Instead a smart notification is displayed on top of the screen which you can use to send a Quick Reply from, without opening the app. This feature combined with the insane number of customization options makes it a great one.
You can set a different colour for each conversation or contact too. The app supports Snooze Notifications, Night Mode and even works with Android Wear smartwatches. And the only IAP (which costs $0.99 or Rs 61) seems to to unlock three Swipe actions.
