Game Review: Gear Jack will entertain you in style

After releasing the 3D endless racer, Redline Rush, Crescent Moon games unleashed their side scrolling game Gear Jack on to Google Play.

Gear Jack is a side scrolling runner game which was released for iOS last year by Piwot Games. Let us take a look at how the Android version of the game fares.

Gameplay:

The game is not just a platform runner, it uses some parkour style moves like jump and roll, floating jumps, and a cool Matrix style powerup: slowtime. It also has various traps like giant falling gears, which you have to tap on to destroy it.

There are 30 levels in the game and you have to collect three stars in each level and let me tell you it it is not easy. It’s all about timing your jumps and rolls. Each level has one or two checkpoints so in case you die, you don’t have to restart the level. But these checkpoints only last when you are playing the level and will not be available once you quit the level or complete it. You can disable checkpoints from the game’s settings to make things more interesting.

Character customization:

You can improve Jack’s abilities from the Garage. To access the Garage, tap on the Play/pause button during a level and select “Garage”

There are 5 stats you can improve:

  • Running
  • Rolling
  • Jumping
  • Slow Time
  • Quickness

You can choose the control layout from the pause menu. There are 6 layouts to choose.

Graphics and music:

The game uses Unity graphics , so its pretty good looking. You can manually tweak the frame rate per second (FPS), the quality of the graphics based on your device’s performance.

Gear Jack - Settings

Despite the fact that it was set to medium by default on my device, I chose to play it in high settings and it still ran flawlessly. The backdrop is animated and adds some value to the graphics quality.

The soundtrack is nice, fast paced and complements the game very well.

You can also use the integrated Google Play Services for Cloud saves, Leaderboards and achievements.

Gear Jack - Google Play Services

Pros:

  1. Great graphics.
  2. Good soundtrack.
  3. Easy to use Controls.
  4. Character customization
  5. Can tweak the graphics, framerate

Cons:

  1. The only flaw in the game is the absence of an exit button. You have to manually close the game.

You can pick up Gear Jack for $2 from:

Gear Jack is truly a masterpiece!
