Pixel Battery Usage Summaries Go Live, but Only on Pixel 10 and Later

Google has started rolling out Battery Usage Summaries on Pixel phones, and its own support documentation now spells out who gets it. The feature puts a short, AI-written recap at the top of the battery usage screen, naming the apps draining your phone. It is limited to the Pixel 10 series and newer, which leaves the Pixel 9 and Pixel 8 out.

What the Pixel battery usage summary actually does

Google’s Pixel Phone Help page describes the summary as a personalised readout that sits above the usual battery graph. Three things feed it, according to that page. It identifies the apps consuming the most battery, monitors app background activity, and compares your consumption over the selected period against your recent average.

That last part is the genuinely new bit. The existing battery screen has always told you which app used what percentage. It has never told you whether today’s drain is unusual for you. Google adds a caveat of its own on the same page, noting that the output varies and surfaces only what it judges most important.

Android Authority reported the rollout going live in the wild, working from a screenshot supplied by Telegram user @avasthiamit. In that example the phone had used roughly 15 percent of its battery, the summary flagged that as higher than usual for the time of day, and it named WhatsApp and Google as the top consumers. An earlier Android Authority teardown indicated the text is generated on-device by Gemini Nano.

Where to find it

Google gives an exact path. Open Settings, then tap Battery and charging, then Battery usage, then Summary. There is no toggle to hunt for. Google says the feature switches itself on automatically wherever it is available.

If Summary is not there, the feature has not reached your device yet. This is a staged rollout tied to a component update rather than a full system update, so it can arrive without an OTA.

Why the Pixel 9 and Pixel 8 are shut out

The eligibility line on Google’s page is short and specific:

This feature requires the latest version of AI Core and is available on Pixel 10 and later devices.

AI Core is the system component that runs Gemini Nano. That is the part worth pausing on. The Pixel 8 Pro was the first phone Google shipped Gemini Nano on, back in 2023, and the Pixel 9 series runs it too. So the cutoff is not a case of older hardware being incapable of running a small on-device model. It is a version requirement on AI Core, and Google has drawn the line at the Pixel 10.

For a Pixel 9 owner who bought in partly on Google’s on-device AI pitch, that is a familiar pattern. Features get announced as the payoff for Tensor silicon, then land a generation later on hardware you do not own. A battery summary is hardly the most consequential example, but it is another one.

This is separate from the September 2026 Android Feature Drop, which Google detailed yesterday and which does not include it.
