Google released the August 2026 Pixel security update on August 4, but every Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series phone was left out. The update (build CP2A.260805.005) rolled out only to the Pixel 8 through Pixel 10a, while the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and 7a received nothing — and Google offered no explanation for the omission.
The Pixel 7a exclusion is the most notable. Unlike the Pixel 6 series, which has been heading toward end of life with increasingly irregular updates since mid-2025, the Pixel 7a had missed only a single monthly update (December 2025) in its entire support history until now. The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are supported through 2027, making their exclusion harder to dismiss as end-of-life wind-down.
Pixel 6 and 7 Update Gaps Keep Growing
Droid-Life has been tracking the update cadence for these devices since the pattern first emerged around July 2025. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro have now missed eight monthly updates in roughly fourteen months — July 2025, August 2025, October 2025, November 2025, January 2026, February 2026, May 2026, and August 2026. Rather than a clean cutoff, Google appears to be delivering updates on a roughly quarterly schedule without ever announcing the change.
The Pixel 6a follows a nearly identical pattern. The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have fared somewhat better, receiving more consistent updates through early 2026, but have now missed five months (November 2025, January 2026, February 2026, May 2026, and August 2026). The Pixel 7a’s miss this month is a sharp departure from its near-perfect record.
Google’s Non-Answer
When Droid-Life asked Google directly about the erratic schedule, the company did not acknowledge any change in cadence. Instead, it offered this statement:
“Pixel phones will remain security compliant for the full duration of their support windows, which can be found here. Your device will remain private and secure through Pixel specific patches, Google Play System Updates and fixes through the Android Security Bulletin. You can also expect your phone to get better over time with regular Pixel Drops and updates to the latest OS for the device’s full support window.”
The word “compliant” is doing heavy lifting here. Google’s own support pages promise years of updates but never explicitly guarantee monthly delivery — only the number of years. That gives Google technical cover to skip months while still claiming the device is within its support window. But for users who bought these phones expecting the same monthly cadence Google has maintained since the original Pixel, the gap between marketing promise and actual delivery is real.
What Pixel 6 and 7 Owners Should Know
The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are confirmed to reach end of life with Android 17 QPR1, expected to go stable in September 2026. For those devices, the inconsistent monthly schedule is likely the new normal for the remaining weeks of support. The Pixel 7 series, however, has over a year of support remaining — owners of those phones have more reason to expect regular updates, and more reason to question why they are not getting them.
Meanwhile, the August update itself is minor for the Pixel 8-10 series that did receive it, with bug fixes for a gaming app crash, GPU performance improvements, and a touch panel responsiveness fix — all limited to Pixel 10 series devices.
