Bluetooth HDT Promises Up to 7.5 Mbps, First Audio Gear Due 2027

The Bluetooth SIG has adopted Bluetooth High Data Throughput, or HDT, a new physical layer for Bluetooth Low Energy. It raises the maximum supported bit rate to 7.5 Mbps. That is nearly four times the 2 Mbps of the existing LE 2M PHY.

According to Android Authority, HDT won’t come to the phone or earbuds you own now. The SIG expects the first flagship use, standardized premium wireless audio, to arrive in 2027.

What Bluetooth HDT actually changes

7.5 Mbps is a ceiling, not a real-world throughput figure. The SIG says the first wave of HDT audio will cover lossless and high-resolution music. Multi-channel surround and spatial audio are also on its list.

The SIG pitches four broader benefits. These are its claims for the standard, not results measured on shipping hardware:

  • Speed: faster data transfers
  • Capacity: better spectral efficiency
  • Energy: the radio spends less time transmitting
  • Reliability: more dependable connections

Beyond audio, the SIG names XR headsets and AI devices such as smart glasses. Industrial systems, wearables, health devices and smart home gear are on its list too.

The SIG’s announcement also carries a comment from Samsung’s chip side. “The significance of Bluetooth® High Data Throughput goes well beyond speed,” said Joonsuk Kim, executive vice president and head of S.LSI CP development at Samsung Electronics.

Why a Bluetooth 7.0 label won’t be enough

HDT is an optional feature in Bluetooth Core 7.0, which the SIG describes as recently adopted. So a phone or a pair of earbuds listing Bluetooth 7.0 support won’t necessarily have HDT. If lossless audio is the reason you’re upgrading, look for HDT by name on the spec sheet.

Android Authority reports that existing devices won’t automatically gain support. Going by that, getting HDT audio means new hardware on both ends: a phone and earbuds that each support it. The outlet also reports that Qualcomm’s FastConnect 8800 chip already advertises HDT support. It notes the SIG didn’t say which phones or earbuds will support HDT first.

For buyers, the upgrade path is the familiar one: new standards arrive through new hardware. If your current earbuds work well, there’s no reason to replace them before HDT products are actually on shelves. Earbuds launching now, like the Galaxy Buds On, arrive ahead of the 2027 window the SIG has set for the first HDT audio gear.
