Apple has acknowledged an inner display issue affecting what it calls a small number of iPhone Duo units. It is telling affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement. The company did not give a cause or say whether a fix is planned.

Apple gave its statement to MacRumors and 9to5Mac on Monday, October 26, and The Verge also reported it. It follows a wave of owner reports of iPhone Duo inner screens breaking at the hinge. Here is the core of what Apple said:
We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.
What iPhone Duo owners should do
Apple’s statement only points owners to AppleCare. The two outlets that carried it add some practical detail.
- No AppleCare+ needed: 9to5Mac reports you don’t need AppleCare+ to have the phone replaced for this problem.
- Bought from a carrier: contact AppleCare directly, not your carrier, according to 9to5Mac.
- In-store stock: MacRumors says affected users have received replacements in Apple Stores, but stock is limited and some have had to wait.
Neither outlet says whether the replacement carries any charge. Confirm that with AppleCare before you hand your phone over.
Where the iPhone Duo cracks appear
According to MacRumors, the damage shows up in the same place on affected units. The cracks run along the hinge, on the lower half of the inner display. Users describe a stuck feeling, and sometimes a popping noise, just before the damage appears.
Apple’s position, as relayed by both outlets, is that the problem is limited in scope. Apple says it tends to surface fairly soon after purchase. MacRumors relays Apple’s view that owners shouldn’t worry about it developing over time.
That is Apple’s assessment, and it has not attached a number to its small-number claim. The cause is also still open. iFixit’s teardown pointed to several components converging at that spot and a center support bar in the hinge that may not retract. We covered those findings in our iPhone Duo teardown and repairability report.
Some crack photos were fake, many were not
MacRumors says it understands some of the crack images shared online were AI-generated. 9to5Mac says a handful of Reddit reports were fake and AI-generated, but that many were legitimate. Apple’s own statement confirms the issue is real on at least some units.
What Apple hasn’t addressed
The statement doesn’t settle earlier reports that Apple refused some warranty claims. It also doesn’t explain why the screens fail, or whether replacement units carry the same risk. For owners of a new foldable, those are the answers that matter most.
If your inner screen feels stuck at the hinge or shows damage, contact AppleCare rather than waiting. Apple has also published an iPhone Duo repair manual that covers the inner display.
