iPhone 18 Pro Max Teardown Confirms US Model Uses Qualcomm, Not Apple’s Own Modem

A teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro Max has confirmed why the US version of the phone was missing Apple’s own C2 modem from its spec sheet: it doesn’t have one. TechInsights’ hardware analysis found the US model uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem instead, while the same phone sold everywhere else in the world ships with Apple’s in-house chip.

This answers a question androidpure raised when the iPhone 18 Pro Max first launched with an unusual gap in its own published spec sheet for the US market.

Why the US model is the odd one out

TechInsights’ teardown, reported by MacRumors, confirms what modem firmware inside the device had already hinted at: the US iPhone 18 Pro Max runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80. Every other iPhone 18 model tells a different story. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo use Apple’s custom C2 modem worldwide, and even the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses the C2 chip in every market outside the US.

That makes the US Pro Max the single exception across Apple’s entire 2026 lineup. TechInsights also identified a newly designed mmWave 5G antenna module built specifically for this US variant, a detail that didn’t carry over from last year’s iPhone 17 Pro Max, which used the same Snapdragon X80 modem globally with no such split.

Apple hasn’t said why

Apple has not explained the decision, and there’s no official statement addressing it as of this writing. MacRumors points to a 2023 agreement in which Qualcomm committed to supplying Apple with modems through 2026, raising the possibility that the US Pro Max is fulfilling the tail end of a supply contract rather than reflecting a technical limitation. That’s speculation from the outlet, not a confirmed reason, and Apple could clarify or contradict it at any time.

Apple has said its C2 modem delivers meaningfully faster uploads than the outgoing C1X chip while using less energy, but that’s Apple’s own performance claim, not an independent measurement, and no side-by-side test against the Snapdragon X80 in this specific phone has been published yet.

What this means for buyers

For someone in the US shopping for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the practical modem experience shouldn’t feel different day to day, since Qualcomm’s X80 already supports mmWave 5G in the US, unlike Apple’s earlier C1 and C1X chips did before catching up this year. But it does mean US buyers of the Pro Max are getting Apple’s most expensive phone with a component sourced from a competitor, while every other market gets Apple’s own silicon throughout. Anyone comparing notes with a Pro Max bought outside the US is comparing two phones with genuinely different modem hardware inside identical-looking bodies.
