Huawei apps pulled from Play Store, future phones won’t get Android Updates and apps as Google prepares to cut ties with OEM

Google is about to cut ties with Huawei, according to a report by Reuters. And as a result all Huawei apps have been pulled from the Play Store.

Huawei apps pulled from Play Store

The news comes in the wake of the recent announcement by the Trump administration, which issued an executive order effectively blacklisting Huawei Technologies. The Mountain View company is complying with the order by the American Government, and is said to be reviewing the implications.

Huawei apps pulled from Play Store

All Huawei apps have been pulled from the Play Store, which means they can no longer be downloaded/updated, and the company will only have access to what is open-source in the Android world.

What does this mean for current users?

People who are already using Huawei/Honor phones will remain unaffected. The Google Play Store, Gmail, YouTube etc will work on your phone. This includes all phones sold outside of China.

Who is affected?

Basically all future Huawei phones (outside of China) will not be able to access Google’s Android OS. The OEM will have to make do with the AOSP (Android Open Source Project), which is devoid of Google Play Services including the Google Play Store and the rest of Google Apps. Huawei could lose its entire foreign market, which is considerably large in India and Europe.

No more Android Updates for Huawei?

With Android Q, Google enabled early access to the Android operating system for OEMs. Huawei won’t be able to get it now, which could be a severe blow for the company.

Android Updates could affect more users

That being said, if Huawei does update its current phones to a newer version, users may no longer be able to access Google services. It’s something that the company may want to avoid

What could Huawei do?

From being a partner with Google (Nexus 6P) to being banned, Huawei sure looks like it has fallen into bad times for now.

But Google could end up being the bigger loser if the OEM does manage to make its own AOSP version without Google services, a success. Of course, this could even result in the birth of a new smartphone OS, something which Huawei has tinkered with in the past.
