Google Maps Immersive Navigation, the 3D driving redesign Google announced back in March and has been dripping out to a small slice of users ever since, appears to be moving into a much wider rollout — and the Android Auto speedometer that was beta-only a week ago is now showing up for people who are not in the beta at all. Both changes are server-side, which means there is no update to install and no setting to flip.

What Immersive Navigation actually changes
Immersive Navigation replaces the flat, mostly-grey navigation canvas with a 3D scene. Buildings, overpasses and terrain are rendered with real geometry, and the road surface itself carries detail that used to be implied rather than drawn — lane markings, crosswalks, traffic lights and stop signs. On Android Auto specifically, drivers are reporting flyovers and off-ramps that visibly stack over one another, and individual trees rendered along the route rather than a generic green wash.
Google’s framing when it introduced the feature was not modest. In the March 12 Google Maps blog post announcing it, written by Miriam Daniel, VP and GM of Google Maps, the company said: “We’re giving the driving experience in Maps its biggest update in over a decade with Immersive Navigation – a complete transformation of the navigation experience, with redesigned visuals and more intuitive guidance.”
The practical argument for it is the one case where a flat map genuinely fails: a stacked interchange, a fork where two exits split within 50 metres, a turn where you cannot tell which of three lanes is yours. A 3D rendering with drawn lane markings resolves that ambiguity faster than an arrow does.
The Android Auto speedometer is no longer beta-only
The second half of this rollout is the live speedometer in Google Maps on Android Auto — a readout of the speed you are actually doing, which is separate from the speed-limit indicator Maps has shown for years. When we covered the speedometer on July 21, it was a narrow server-side test that essentially required beta enrolment to see. It is now appearing for users on the stable channel.
Sightings are generally attached to the current Android Auto build, but having the latest version installed does not guarantee the feature — the switch is flipped on Google’s side, per account, not per app version.
How widely is it actually rolling out?
Here is the part worth being honest about. A 9to5Google reader poll earlier in July found only a little over 10% of respondents had Immersive Navigation at all, and the rollout has been running since March 12. 9to5Google’s description of Google “opening the floodgates” is about a change in pace, not an announcement that everyone has it — Google has published no completion date and no eligibility list.
Availability is also still US-first. Google’s own March post said Immersive Navigation was starting in the US with availability expanding “over the coming months to eligible iOS and Android devices, CarPlay, Android Auto and cars with Google built-in.” Four months on, that expansion is clearly still in progress, and drivers in India, the EU and most other markets should treat this as coming rather than here. Our own read: if you do not have it yet, there is nothing to do about it, and reinstalling Maps or clearing its cache — the standard forum advice — does not move a server-side flag.
What you can check
- Update Google Maps and Android Auto from the Play Store, so a missing app version is not the blocker.
- Open Google Maps on your phone and look at the top-right corner — a Gemini icon in place of the old Assistant icon is the clearest sign your account has been moved to the newer Maps experience.
- Start a drive in Android Auto and watch the map itself: 3D buildings, stacked overpasses and rendered trees are the tell, not any icon in the head-unit UI.
- For the speedometer, check whether a live speed readout appears alongside the speed-limit sign. If only the limit shows, the flag has not reached you.
- If neither appears, wait. There is no toggle in Maps settings that enables either feature.
