Google Cancels AI Studio App After 800,000 Pre-Registrations, Folds It Into Gemini

Google has canceled its standalone AI Studio mobile app one day before its expected launch, despite roughly 800,000 people having pre-registered for it across Android and iOS. The app listings have been pulled from both Google Play and the App Store, and Google says it will fold AI Studio’s app-building features directly into the Gemini app instead.

The cancellation, announced on July 31 via the official Google AI Studio account, is a striking move: 800,000 pre-registrations is a significant show of interest, and pulling the plug that close to release suggests an internal strategic shift rather than a technical problem.

Google AI Studio App Canceled: What Was Planned

The AI Studio app was announced at Google I/O 2026 as a mobile companion to the existing AI Studio web tool. It was designed to let developers and creators build, test, and publish AI-powered applications directly from their phones, with features like app remixing and cross-device project syncing. Pre-registration opened immediately after the announcement and accumulated the 800,000 figure across both platforms.

What Replaces It

Google says it is bringing AI Studio’s core capabilities into the Gemini app on both mobile and desktop. No timeline has been given for when those features will actually appear in Gemini. The AI Studio web experience — aistudio.google.com — continues unchanged.

The reasoning Google offered publicly amounts to not wanting users to install a separate app for functionality that could live inside Gemini. That framing is convenient, but it is also worth reading plainly: this consolidates yet another Google tool into the Gemini ecosystem, which is increasingly the single funnel through which Google routes its AI products. For users who pre-registered specifically because they wanted a lightweight, dedicated app-building tool on their phone, being told to wait for an unscheduled Gemini integration is not a like-for-like replacement — it is a promise with no delivery date.

What Pre-Registered Users Should Do

If you pre-registered for the AI Studio app on Google Play or the App Store, there is nothing to do — the listing is gone, and no charge was involved. The web version at aistudio.google.com remains fully functional for anyone who wants to use AI Studio’s existing capabilities today. For the mobile features Google promised, the only option is to wait for whatever Gemini integration eventually materializes.

Google has a long history of launching and then killing standalone apps — from Allo to Google Podcasts to Stadia — and this cancellation, while less dramatic than those, follows the same pattern of consolidation into fewer, larger products. Whether the Gemini app actually ships the promised features, and when, remains to be seen.
