Gboard Hidden Settings That Make Typing on Android Actually Better

Gboard ships with sensible defaults, but those defaults assume average-sized hands, no specialized vocabulary, and a tolerance for hunting through the top row for numbers. If any of those assumptions don’t fit you, a few minutes in Gboard’s settings can make a real difference. Here are five settings worth changing right now.

Stop Autocorrect From Mangling Names: Add a Personal Dictionary

If Gboard keeps “correcting” a colleague’s name, a brand, or a technical term you type daily, the fix is a personal dictionary entry. Open your phone’s Settings, then go to System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Dictionary > Personal dictionary, pick your language, and tap the + icon. Type the word exactly as you want it to appear. You can also add an optional shortcut — a short abbreviation that expands to the full word. Every entry you add prevents Gboard from overriding that word with its own suggestion.

Adjust Keyboard Height If Your Thumbs Can’t Reach

The default keyboard height works for some hands but not all — too tall and your thumbs strain to reach the top row, too short and you mistype constantly. Go to Gboard Settings > Preferences > Keyboard height and pick from seven levels, ranging from Extra-short to Extra-tall. On newer Gboard builds, you may also see a Resize option directly in the toolbar (tap the four-square icon) that lets you drag the keyboard edges — but the Preferences path is available on all current stable versions.

Enable the Number Row to Stop Switching Layouts

By default, Gboard hides the number row behind a long-press or a layout switch. If you type numbers often — addresses, PINs, dates, dimensions — a dedicated number row across the top of the keyboard saves a tap on every single digit. Go to Gboard Settings > Preferences and toggle on Number row. The keyboard gets slightly taller, but the time saved adds up fast.

Rearrange Your Toolbar for Quick Access

Gboard’s toolbar — the strip above the suggestions row — can hold shortcuts to Clipboard, Translate, Voice typing, and other tools, but it ships in a generic order that may not match what you actually use. To rearrange it, tap the four-square grid icon in the toolbar, then tap the pen (edit) icon. Drag your most-used tools to the pinned positions at the top. If you use Clipboard paste dozens of times a day, putting it in the first slot means one fewer tap every time.

Turn On Auto-Space After Punctuation

This one is small but saves hundreds of manual space-bar taps a day if you type a lot of messages. Go to Gboard Settings > Preferences and toggle on Auto-space after punctuation. Once enabled, Gboard automatically inserts a space after you select a punctuation mark from the suggestion strip, so you can keep typing the next word immediately instead of hitting the space bar first.

None of these settings are buried in developer options or experimental flags — they’re all in Gboard’s stable release, available on any Android phone running a recent version. The exact menu paths can shift slightly between Android versions and OEM skins (Samsung’s One UI, Xiaomi’s HyperOS, etc. sometimes reorganize their input settings menus), but the setting names inside Gboard itself stay consistent. If you can’t find the system-level path, open Gboard in any text field, tap the gear icon in the toolbar, and you’ll land in Gboard’s own settings directly.
