Apple is giving iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 owners another year of free satellite features, according to a footnote in its iPhone 18 Pro press release. Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages via satellite, Find My via satellite, and Roadside Assistance via satellite all stay free for eligible devices, with no word yet on what happens after this extension runs out.
What Apple actually said
Apple’s own newsroom announcement states it plainly: “Apple is extending free access to satellite features for an additional year for existing iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 users.” The eligibility requirement is equally specific: the extension applies to “iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 users who have activated their device in a country that supports Apple’s satellite features prior to midnight PT on September 9.”
So there are two conditions to clear. The phone has to be one of those three generations, and it has to have been activated, in a country where Apple’s satellite features already work, before that September 9 cutoff. Buy a used iPhone 14 today in a supported country and activate it now, and you should still qualify, since the requirement is about activation timing, not purchase date.
Not the first extension
This is at least the third time Apple has kept satellite access free for the iPhone 14 series rather than letting the original two-year trial that started at its November 2022 launch expire on schedule. iPhone 15’s free trial was due to run out this year before this extension arrived, and iPhone 16, which launched more recently, gets folded into the same rolling free period for the first time. The features run on Apple’s partnership with satellite operator Globalstar.
Buyers of the new iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo get their own complimentary year of satellite access starting at purchase, separate from this extension for older models.
The catch: no long-term commitment
Apple still hasn’t said what it plans to charge once free access eventually ends, or whether it ever will. Repeatedly rolling the deadline forward by another year, rather than committing to keep the features free permanently or naming a firm price, keeps the feature valuable for marketing every device generation while leaving Apple free to start charging whenever it decides the moment is right. For now, existing iPhone 14, 15, and 16 owners get another twelve months at no cost, but there is still no permanent guarantee attached to it.
