iPhone Apps Can Now Pitch an Offer Before You Cancel a Subscription

Cancelling an App Store subscription on your iPhone can now come with a pitch to stay. Apple made Retention Messaging available to developers on November 4. Developers can set up a message that appears before you confirm a cancellation, and some will attach a discount or free period. Each message goes through Apple’s review before it goes live.

The key point for subscribers is that the Cancel Subscription button remains on the confirmation screen in Apple’s own mock-up. A Keep Subscription button sits alongside it, and any offer shows up on the same screen.

What you’ll see when you cancel an App Store subscription

Once you start cancelling, the Confirm Cancellation screen can include a section from the developer. According to Apple’s App Store Connect help page, it will show one of three things:

  • Text only: a short message from the developer.
  • Text and an image: used when there’s no offer, or when you aren’t eligible for one.
  • Text and a retention offer: shown only if you qualify.

A retention offer is either a discount or a free period. Developers can set it up as pay as you go, pay up front or free. Each option carries its own duration and price. Apple’s example shows a yoga app called Yoga+ offering three months at $2.99, then $4.99 a month. That price is Apple’s mock-up, not a real deal.

Who gets an offer, and who decides

Developers choose who qualifies. They set a minimum length of paid subscription and can add a waiting period between offers. They can also limit offers to selected countries or regions.

Developers can request access to a Retention Messaging API as well. It lets an app pick which message each subscriber sees based on their subscription details. Apple caps each app at 10 retention messages, with one active message per subscription. Each subscription billing plan type can carry up to 10 offers. The message text itself can’t mention specific offers or prices, because every subscriber sees it.

How this differs from Win-Back Offers

Apple already has Win-Back Offers, introduced in 2024, which target people who have already cancelled. Retention messages work earlier, before you finish cancelling. Apple first announced the feature at WWDC 2026.

Should you take the offer?

Apple is upfront about the goal. Its announcement to developers described the feature like this:

Reduce cancellations with retention messages that remind subscribers of your subscription’s value as they decide whether to cancel.

That pitch is written for developers, not for you. A discount can save real money if you were going to stay anyway. But the message you see is picked using your subscription details, and its purpose is to keep you paying. Apple’s documentation doesn’t describe a way for users to turn these messages off.

If you want out, read the screen carefully and tap Cancel Subscription. If you accept an offer, note when the cheaper period ends and what the full price will be afterwards. Apple’s grip on App Store rules is also being tested elsewhere, including an order to open the iPhone to rival app stores in Australia.
