Android 17 QPR1’s stable release swapped two status bar icons on Pixel phones this week, and Google hasn’t said whether the change was intentional.
9to5Google spotted the change after the stable Android 17 QPR1 build started rolling out this week. The mute or silent-mode icon has gone back to a bell, replacing the crossed-out speaker Google introduced with Android 14. The VPN icon has also changed shape, now rendering thicker and fully filled in rather than as an outline.
Why this looks like a mistake
Neither change showed up during the Android 17 QPR1 beta cycle. Both appeared only with this week’s stable OTA, which is unusual: beta builds are normally where Google tests exactly this kind of visual change before it reaches everyone. The speaker icon for mute is still present in the Android 17 QPR2 beta, which is running in parallel on a separate track. That split between two active builds is one of the clearer signs this wasn’t a planned design refresh, since Google typically carries an intentional icon change forward into its next beta rather than reverting it.
The volume slider hasn’t caught up either. Its icon at the top of the panel still uses the bell, so it was already somewhat inconsistent with the crossed-out speaker that had been the mute icon on the status bar since Android 14. This week’s change puts the status bar’s mute icon back in line with the volume slider, even if by accident.
What Pixel owners will notice
The practical impact is small: two glance-able icons look different, and nothing about how mute or VPN actually function has changed. If it is a bug, a fix is more likely to land with the next quarterly update in December, Android 17 QPR2, than in a smaller patch before then. Google has not commented on either icon change as of this writing.
Android 17 QPR1 is rolling out now to eligible Pixel phones as part of this month’s Pixel feature drop, though 9to5Google notes it had not yet reached the Pixel 11 series at the time of its report.
