Google is rolling out Gmail Live to paid Google Workspace users on Android and iOS. It adds a voice session to the Gmail search bar. You ask questions about your inbox out loud, and Gemini answers while showing the email it used. For now it only works for US users with US English set as their language.

How Gmail Live works
To start, tap the Live entry point in the Gmail search bar on a supported phone. The first time you do, Gmail asks for microphone access. Google describes the feature as a low-latency, inbox-aware voice search built on its Gemini models.
Google’s examples are everyday ones. You might ask which gate tomorrow’s flight leaves from, or for the latest update from your manager. Every answer comes with an email source card, so you can see which message it was drawn from. You can also pick the voice Gmail Live speaks in from inside the feature.
The voice-first approach follows Docs Live, which pulls from Gmail, Drive and Chat while you talk. It is a bigger change than recent Gmail conveniences like copying 2FA codes without opening the email.
Who gets Gmail Live
Google’s announcement sets a firm language and region limit:
Note that this feature is currently only available to users in the US with EN-US as their language.
Within that limit, Google’s availability list covers these plans:
- Business: Starter, Standard and Plus
- Enterprise: Starter, Standard and Plus
- Other editions: Frontline Plus and Nonprofits
- Add-ons: Gemini Business, Gemini Enterprise, AI Expanded Access and AI Ultra Access
- Education add-ons: Google AI Pro for Education
- Consumer plans: Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra
The consumer line is the unclear part. The post’s title and introduction address Workspace users. It does not say whether personal Gmail accounts on those AI plans get the feature. Until Google says so, treat Gmail Live as a Workspace feature first.
On by default for work accounts
Google says Gmail Live is on by default for organizations with Gemini in Workspace access. It follows any existing admin settings for smart features and personalization. On a Gemini-enabled work account, the feature may simply appear unless your admin has changed those settings.
Google’s announcement does not explain how voice queries are processed or how long they are kept. What it does offer is visibility. Source cards show where each answer came from, and the microphone prompt gives you a checkpoint on first use.
Rollout timeline
The rollout began on October 15 for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. Google says the feature can take up to 15 days to become visible, so eligible accounts should see it by around October 30.
