Ray-Ban Meta Owners Report Unprompted Recordings, Meta Says It’s Fixed

Some Ray-Ban Meta owners say their glasses recorded conversations without hearing the Hey Meta wake phrase. Meta told Android Authority the issue has been resolved, but its statement doesn’t say what caused it. Here’s what owners reported, what Meta said, and how to check your own glasses.

What Ray-Ban Meta owners reported

One owner cited by Android Authority says three separate pairs captured conversations without the wake phrase. Those pairs spanned second- and third-generation models. The owner says this happened even with the Respond without Hey Meta setting turned off. They also say the glasses’ LED sometimes lit up during normal conversation.

Several commenters described similar activations, including the light turning on without Meta AI being invoked. The owner believes the problem began after a recent firmware update. That’s the owner’s account, not a confirmed cause. 9to5Google also picked up the story, citing Reddit users with similar complaints.

What Meta says about the recordings

Meta’s response came in an update to Android Authority’s report on October 13:

This issue has been resolved. People can manage, review and delete voice logs of their interactions with Meta AI via settings at any time.

Meta, statement to Android Authority

Android Authority says it asked Meta whether a recent update could be responsible. The statement it published doesn’t answer that. The outlet also says it hasn’t reproduced the behavior itself. It describes the reports as limited, with no evidence the problem is widespread.

Still, a two-sentence statement is a thin answer for a device with microphones sitting on your face. Meta’s statement doesn’t explain what triggered the recordings or how the problem was fixed. Owners are left to take the fix on trust.

How to check your Ray-Ban Meta glasses

You don’t have to rely on Meta’s word alone. Meta says voice logs can be reviewed and deleted from settings at any time.

  1. Open the Voice activity log for your glasses in the Meta app. Look for entries you don’t recognize, including ones with no transcript.
  2. Delete anything you don’t want kept. The log has a Delete all option if you’d rather clear it entirely.
  3. Confirm that Respond without Hey Meta is turned off if you only want the glasses to respond after the wake phrase. Keep in mind that the owner says the recordings happened with this setting already off, so it isn’t a guaranteed safeguard.
  4. Keep an eye on the LED. If it lights up when you haven’t spoken to Meta AI, note the time and compare it with the log.

Meta has been adding settings to the glasses lately, including the mono audio and audio balance options we covered this month. A clearer explanation of this bug would be a more useful addition.
