Foldables in 2026: Still Just 2% of the Global Smartphone Market

Foldable phones still account for just 2% of the global smartphone market, according to Counterpoint data reported by Droid Life. That number lands roughly seven years into Samsung’s foldable push. It also lands with a full field of rivals now selling book-style and clamshell devices. The category has stopped being a novelty, but it has not come close to becoming mainstream.

Why foldables are stuck at 2%

Droid Life’s own read on the ceiling is blunt:

The problem facing mass adoption remains the same: Price.

That matches what buyers actually see on a shelf. A book-style foldable still carries a large premium over a conventional flagship. Hinges got thinner and creases got fainter across generations, but none of that moved the entry price.

The honest framing for a shopper is this. Foldables are not failing because the hardware is bad. They are failing to spread because the asking price sits above what most people will pay for a phone. Until a foldable lands near ordinary flagship money, 2% is roughly what the category should expect.

Samsung owns most of a very small segment

Within that slice, Samsung is still the default. Droid Life reports that Samsung holds 76.2% of the foldable market, and that eight of the ten most-used foldable devices are Samsung’s.

The per-device picture is more interesting than the headline share. Among foldables in global Speedtest data, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 leads at 24.2%. The newer Galaxy Z Fold 8 sits ninth at 3.3%, and the Galaxy Z TriFold registers just 0.5%. So the current-generation and halo models are not where the users are. The generation that has been on sale longest is doing the heavy lifting.

The Apple question

The one event that could move the needle has not happened yet. Apple’s foldable iPhone, widely referred to as the iPhone Duo, remains an unannounced and rumored product. Nothing about it is confirmed.

Droid Life’s piece cites expectations of a roughly 20% jump in the overall foldable market in 2026 once Apple enters. Apple is expected to take around 28% of that expansion. A 20% jump on a 2% base is still a small number. Even in that scenario, foldables stay a niche within the wider smartphone market rather than a replacement for the slab phone.

For anyone weighing a foldable right now, the practical takeaway is unchanged. You are buying into a category that works well and sells in small numbers. Expect accessory support, carrier deals, and trade-in offers to stay thinner than they are for conventional flagships.
