iQOO 16 Debuts Samsung’s 10,000-Nit OLED, But Read the Fine Print

Samsung Display has unveiled its new M16 OLED panel, and the iQOO 16, which launched in China today, is the first Android phone to use it. The panel’s headline number is a 10,000-nit peak brightness figure, but that is not the brightness you will actually see on screen most of the time.

Samsung Display’s M16 panel: what the numbers actually mean

Samsung Display detailed the M16 OLED material at a joint event with iQOO held in South Korea today. The panel already ships in Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro series and the iPhone Duo, but the iQOO 16 is its first appearance on an Android device.

The 10,000-nit figure that will show up in marketing and spec sheets is a local peak, meaning it only applies to a small patch of the screen, such as a highlight in HDR video, and only for a brief moment. The number that matters for everyday use is the global peak brightness, which Samsung Display rates at 2,800 nits. Gizmochina’s report on the iQOO 16 adds a third figure: 1,100 nits of manual peak brightness, which is closer to what you get when you push the slider to maximum yourself in bright sunlight.

Treat the 10,000-nit number as a lab-condition ceiling, not a promise about how the screen will look in your hand. A 2,800-nit global peak is still very bright by current standards, and it is the figure worth comparing against other phones.

Specifications

  • Resolution: WQHD, 2,560 x 1,440 pixels
  • Refresh rate: LTPO, variable from 1Hz to 165Hz
  • Brightness: up to 2,800 nits global peak, up to 10,000 nits local peak
  • Color: 1.24x DCI-P3 gamut coverage
  • Touch sampling: 5,000Hz
  • Dimming: 3,300Hz PWM dimming, plus a polarizer-free (on-cell film) construction and an anti-reflective coating
  • Power: up to 30% lower power consumption than Samsung Display’s previous-generation panel

Samsung Display classifies the M16 under its LEAD 2.0 series. SamMobile’s report also notes that today’s announcement suggests the Pixel 11 series is using an older-generation Samsung Display panel rather than the M16, though that is an inference from the timing, not something Google or Samsung Display has confirmed.

Where else this panel might land

SamMobile reports that the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra are expected to use the M16 panel when they launch early next year. Treat that as an unconfirmed relay for now, since neither Samsung nor Samsung Display has said so directly.

The iQOO 16 itself launched only in China today, with no India or global pricing and availability announced yet. Given iQOO’s usual pattern, an India launch under the iQOO or sibling vivo branding often follows within a few months, but nothing is confirmed at this point.
