How to Make Any Pixel 11 Camera Look Your Permanent Default

You pick one of the Pixel 11’s stylized Camera Looks, shoot with it all afternoon, close the app — and the next time you open the camera you are back on the standard processing. It looks like a bug. It is not. There is a setting that makes any Look stick, and Google has filed it two menus deep, in a place most people will never open by accident.

Why your Pixel 11 Camera Look keeps resetting

The confusion comes from Google splitting one idea into two systems that share a menu.

Google’s own Pixel Camera help page describes them as separate things. A default Look changes how your HDR photos are processed — you set it from a dropdown, and Google’s page says it “will be applied every time you open the Camera app.” A stylized Look is the creative option you get by swiping across the viewfinder, and by default it lasts only as long as your current session.

So the persistence you want already exists, but out of the box it only applies to the handful of processing options in that dropdown. 9to5Google lists those as Original, Natural, Shadows and Vanilla, with the more distinctive styles — Velvet, Classic, Digi — sitting outside it. Pick one of those and the camera treats it as a temporary mood, not a preference.

The fix is a toggle called Always use selected Look. Turning it on tells the camera to treat whichever stylized Look you last chose as your standing default.

How to make any Camera Look your default on Pixel 11

  1. Open the Camera app and make sure you are in Photo mode.
  2. Tap the settings icon in the lower-left corner of the viewfinder.
  3. Tap the three-dot overflow menu in the upper-right of the settings panel — Google labels this route Photo settings, then More.
  4. Scroll down to the Photo section of the list.
  5. Turn on Always use selected Look.

Now go back to the viewfinder and choose the Look you actually want. Tap Controls at the bottom right, then Looks at the bottom left, and swipe across the viewfinder to move between the stylized options. Whatever you leave selected is what the camera opens with next time.

While you are in there, the per-Look sliders are worth a minute. Google’s help page notes that fine-tuning a Look with controls like Contrast or Highlights saves those changes to that Look, so a tweaked style carries its adjustments with it rather than resetting.

How to tell which Look is active, and switch faster

Once a stylized Look is running full time, you want to know it is there. Google’s page says a small indicator appears at the bottom right of the viewfinder whenever a Look is active. Per 9to5Google’s description, the style’s name also flashes briefly in that corner as the app opens, and a purple Looks icon stays put after it fades.

That icon has a quirk worth knowing about. 9to5Google reports that tapping it drops you straight into the Looks menu rather than the general controls, so reaching exposure or white balance from there means hitting Back first.

If you switch styles often, add a shortcut instead. Google documents a quick access control for exactly this:

  1. Tap the settings icon in the lower-left corner of the viewfinder, then the three-dot overflow menu in the upper-right.
  2. Tap Quick access controls, then Turn on quick access controls.
  3. Tap the viewfinder to bring the controls up. You can have up to four, two on each side, and drag them to reposition.

We covered how that redesigned quick access layout works on Pixel 11 in more detail if you want the full set.

The caveat

Two things to keep in mind. Camera Looks is a Pixel 11 feature — asked directly whether it would reach older Pixels, Google declined to commit either way, so this setting is not something to go hunting for on a Pixel 10.

And a Look is applied as you shoot, not afterwards in Google Photos. Google describes a default Look as changing how HDR photos are processed, and per The Verge’s account of the system, the styles alter how image data is handled rather than adjusting a finished image — a description we have flagged before as plausible but not confirmed by Google. Either way, leaving an aggressive style on permanently means every casual photo you take carries it. That is fine if you chose it deliberately. It is less fine three weeks later when you have forgotten it is on — which is precisely why the small viewfinder indicator matters more than it looks.
