Huawei Pura X View: A Non-Folding Phone With a 16:9.5 Wide Screen

Huawei has unveiled the Pura X View, a phone that does not fold and does not have a conventional tall screen either. Its display runs a 16:9.5 aspect ratio — far wider than the 20:9 slabs everyone else sells — making it the first non-folding phone built around the wide-screen shape that has so far only existed on the inside of a foldable. It is a China launch, with reservations already open on Huawei’s own store and JD.com.

What a 16:9.5 phone actually looks like

The maths is worth doing. A 20:9 phone screen is about 2.2 times taller than it is wide; a 16:9.5 screen is about 1.7 times taller than it is wide. That sounds like a small change and is not — it is roughly the difference between a phone screen and a paperback page. Huawei’s own product page pitches the shape around reading, gaming, video and document work — the four things a narrow phone is worst at. Comics and e-books fit a page rather than a column; a spreadsheet shows more than three fields.

The trade-off is the one nobody advertises. A phone this wide is harder to operate with one hand and harder to slide into a jeans pocket, and every app that assumes a tall canvas will need to adapt or letterbox. Huawei has been iterating towards this shape for a while with the folding Pura X, so it has more software groundwork here than a rival starting cold — but “the apps you use will look right on it” is a claim to test rather than assume.

Specifications

Huawei has not published a full spec sheet, and the chipset is the notable gap. Reports point to a Kirin 9030S, but Huawei itself has not named the processor, so treat that as unconfirmed. What the company does list on its own page:

  • Display — 16:9.5 aspect ratio, 2,232 x 1,320 resolution, 6,500 nits local peak brightness (Huawei’s figure, measured at 1% APL), 2,160Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, 96.1% screen-to-body ratio, 1.05mm bezels on all four sides
  • Body — 6.68mm thick, 201g
  • Battery — 7,000mAh
  • Software — Debuts with HarmonyOS 7
  • Colours — Four options, listed by Huawei as 跃影红 (red), 亚麻灰 (grey), 零度白 (white) and 幻夜黑 (black)

The weight-to-battery ratio is the quietly impressive number. A 7,000mAh cell in a 201g, 6.68mm body is dense packaging by any standard, and it suggests the wide footprint is buying internal volume as well as screen area.

Availability, and why this matters outside China

Reservations are open now through Huawei’s Vmall store and JD.com, with in-store hands-on reported to begin on 28 August. Pricing has not been announced. This is a China-market launch, and given Huawei’s position in Western markets there is no realistic expectation of a US, EU or India release — so for most readers this is not a phone to plan around buying.

It is still worth paying attention to. The wide-screen idea has been spreading through foldables — Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 moved to a wider unfolded ratio, and rumours of an Apple “iPhone Ultra” have kept the shape in the conversation — but always as a consequence of the hinge, never as a deliberate choice on a normal phone. The Pura X View is the first attempt to sell the shape on its own merits, without asking anyone to pay foldable prices or live with a crease. Whether that works commercially will tell other manufacturers rather a lot, and they will all be watching the sales figures.
