iPhone 18 Reportedly Slips to 2027 as the Memory Crunch Bites

Apple is expected to break a launch pattern it has held since the iPhone 11 in 2019: the standard iPhone 18 will not arrive alongside the Pro models this September and is now lined up for the first quarter of 2027. The claim comes from Apple assembly partner Pegatron, which addressed the schedule change on its second-quarter 2026 earnings call. For Android buyers this matters less as Apple news than as another reading on the component crunch that has already pushed phone prices up across the industry.

What Pegatron said about the iPhone 18 schedule

MacRumors, reporting on the call, wrote that “Pegatron held an earnings call for the second quarter of 2026 today” and indicated “that one of its customers will be changing its usual smartphone shipment schedule” — supplier shorthand for Apple. The upshot is that the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and Apple’s first foldable are still on for September, with the standard iPhone 18 following in Q1 2027 alongside the iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air.

The reason is where the sources part company. MacRumors offers no explanation from the call itself. GSMArena, citing a Chinese-language report on the same call, attributes the split to “the chipset and memory shortage, which has led to an increase in smartphone prices,” plus a bottleneck in semiconductor manufacturing. Read that as an attributed explanation rather than something Apple or Pegatron has stated outright — Apple has said nothing publicly about any of this.

Why this is an Android story too

If the largest and best-funded phone buyer on the planet is rationing its supply toward the models with the fattest margins, nobody further down the queue is getting a better deal. The memory squeeze is already visible in Android pricing: it is the mechanism behind the entry-level contraction in IDC’s India shipment numbers and behind the price increases Counterpoint recorded in the US market. DRAM and NAND allocated to AI servers do not reach phones, and a budget Android device selling near the bottom of the market has no margin to absorb the difference.

The practical read for anyone shopping this year: expect fewer aggressive configurations, expect the 12GB and 16GB RAM tiers to carry a bigger premium than they used to, and be sceptical when a brand quietly trims base storage or memory while keeping the price flat. That is the shortage arriving on your invoice without a press release announcing it. Anyone cross-shopping an iPhone against a Galaxy or a Pixel this autumn also now faces a narrower Apple lineup, with the cheapest new iPhone in the September range being a Pro.

None of this is confirmed by Apple, and a supplier earnings call is not a product announcement. Treat the Q1 2027 date as a well-sourced expectation, not a shipping schedule.
