Tap to Share Brings AirDrop-Style Transfers to Android, Starting With Pixel

Quick Share is getting the one trick it never had: you can now physically tap two Android phones together to move something between them. Google calls it Tap to Share, and it started rolling out today — but only to Pixel 6 and newer to begin with, with the rest of Android waiting behind a vague “by the end of the year” promise.

How Tap to Share works on Android

There are two separate gestures, and the difference matters. For contact details, you don’t open anything at all — Google’s announcement says: “When you’re on your home screen, just bring your compatible Android device and another Android device close together for an instant, two-way exchange.” Both people get the other’s card in one motion, with no menu.

For files, you pick the content first: “To share photos or videos, open your phone’s Share Sheet and then tap the devices together.” So the tap replaces the part of Quick Share that has always been the weakest link — hunting for the right device name in a list of nearby phones and hoping it appears. Contact info, photos and videos are the content types Google names; it describes the feature as covering those “and more” without listing what else.

Which phones get it, and when

  • Rolling out today: Pixel 6 and newer
  • Coming soon: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8
  • Everyone else: “more Android devices by the end of the year”, with no device list and no date

That middle tier is the interesting one. Samsung is by far the largest Android manufacturer, and the three devices Google named are its newest and most expensive foldables — not the Galaxy S flagships that sell in far greater numbers, and certainly not the mid-range A-series that most Samsung owners actually carry.

The honest read is that this is a feature launched for a sliver of Android, announced to all of it. A tap-to-transfer gesture is only useful if the phone in the other person’s hand also supports it, so the value of Tap to Share is close to zero until the install base is wide — and Google has committed to a year-end window rather than a date, with no published list of which devices qualify. Pixel owners get a neat party trick today. Everyone else gets a note to check back later.

If you have a Pixel 6 or newer, there is nothing to enable: Google says the feature is rolling out now, and rollouts of this kind reach devices in waves rather than all at once.
