Google TV Freeplay Adds 10,000 Free Movies and Shows On Demand

Google TV Freeplay has added video-on-demand. In an announcement posted on August 11, Google said the free, built-in service now carries more than 10,000 movies and shows you can start any time, alongside an expanded live lineup of more than 300 channels. Until now, Freeplay was essentially a grid of linear channels — you watched whatever happened to be on. The on-demand library changes what the service is for.

Victoria Wen, Product Manager for Google TV, described the change in the post: “You can now watch more than 10,000 free movies and shows whenever you want ― no subscription required. We’re also expanding our TV lineup to include more than 300 free live channels across news, sports, reality TV, true crime, and more.”

What Google TV Freeplay now includes

  • On-demand library — more than 10,000 movies and shows, with titles from studios including A24 and Lionsgate. Google names “Lady Bird,” “Seventeen Again” and “Hell’s Kitchen” as examples, and says the library will be refreshed through the year.
  • Live channels — more than 300, spanning news, sports, reality TV and true crime. New additions called out by Google include World of Love Island, Bloomberg TV+, Yahoo! Sports Network and The Martha Stewart Channel.
  • How to get it — open the Freeplay app from the Google TV home screen. There is no sign-up step and no separate download.

Availability and the catch worth knowing

Freeplay is US-only. Google states this plainly in the announcement’s own footnotes: the service is “Available on Google TV devices in the U.S. only,” and requires a Google Account and a high-speed connection. If you are on a Google TV device outside the United States, this rollout does not reach you, and Google has not said when or whether it will.

The second thing to be clear-eyed about is what “free” means here. Google’s footnote confirms both the live channels and the on-demand content are ad-supported, which puts Freeplay in the same category as Tubi, Pluto TV and Roku’s free channels. You are not paying a subscription; you are paying in ad breaks, and on a Google-operated service, in the viewing data that makes those ads worth selling. That is a reasonable trade for a library this size, but it is a trade, not a giveaway — and it is the part the word “free” in the headline does the most work to obscure.

For Android and Google TV owners in the US, it still meaningfully raises the floor of what a TV does out of the box. A device that previously offered free live channels and a wall of paid rentals now has a genuine no-cost catalogue sitting on the home screen, which is the strongest argument Google has made in a while for buying a Google TV Streamer over a competing dongle.
