Aptoide Games Becomes the First Rival App Store Listed Inside Google Play

Aptoide Games, a gaming-focused Android marketplace founded in 2009, is now available for download directly from Google Play in the United States. It is the first competing app store to be listed inside Google Play under the new Play Catalog Access program, ending more than a decade in which rival storefronts were effectively locked out of Google’s platform.

The listing means US Android users can search for Aptoide Games in the Play Store, install it like any other app, and browse its catalog of over 400,000 applications without sideloading or navigating security warnings. The move follows years of legal pressure stemming from the Epic Games v. Google litigation, which challenged how Google restricted app distribution on Android. AndroidPure covered the court order that forced this opening back in July.

“This is much more than a product launch. More than ten years ago, Android users lost the ability to discover alternative app stores through Google Play. Today, that changes. Users gain more choice, developers gain additional distribution opportunities, and Android becomes a more open and competitive ecosystem.”

That is Aptoide CEO and co-founder Paulo Trezentos, in a press release announcing the return. The company says it serves roughly 25 million monthly active users worldwide and has also been approved on iOS in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act, as well as in Japan and Brazil through those countries’ alternative marketplace programs.

What This Means for Android Users

Until now, alternative Android app stores existed only as pre-installed software (Samsung’s Galaxy Store, the Amazon Appstore on Fire tablets) or as sideloaded APKs requiring users to override security defaults. Direct Play Store availability removes the largest adoption barrier for third-party stores and could push competing marketplaces to offer distinct promotions, better indie-game curation, or lower commission rates to attract developers away from Google’s 15-to-30-percent cut.

Google appears to have prepared a dedicated section within the Play Store for third-party app stores, according to The Verge, suggesting Aptoide will not be the last. Whether this actually delivers meaningful competition or simply gives Google the appearance of openness without changing market dynamics will depend on how many stores follow and how aggressively they differentiate.

Aptoide says it runs its own malware scanning, developer verification, and suspicious-activity detection systems independently of Google’s Play Protect.
