Samsung is renown for its extraordinary designs, when it comes to its mobiles. We have seen the likes of the insanely big Mega series, the really cool Note series, which kind of gave rise to phablets.
But the South Korean company’s real innovation came in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, and later the Samsung Galaxy s6 Edge which featured the dual curved edge screens.
This unique design dropped the jaws of fans, and the success showed when the S7 Edge was launched earlier this year. As a matter of fact, if you ask us which is the best phone in 2016, we would probably say it is the S7 Edge.
Samsung did pull a surprise when it launched this year’s flagship phablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. No, it was not the name shift from Note 5 to 7, which shocked fans, but it was the phone’s display. The company has taken a rather huge gamble, by going with an Edge only Note 7. The fact that there is, and will not be a flat screen Note 7 is incredible.
It appears that Samsung’s decision to do so, was a calculated risk. GSMArena writes about a report from Korea Herald, which quotes Dong-jin Koh, the President of Mobile at Samsung. His statement in an interview is as follows:
“Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen)
This hints that Samsung’s future flagships may not have flat screen variants. So, going by this logic, we could be looking at one Galaxy S8, which may even drop the Edge branding from its name. There is no point in “Edge”, if there is going to be just the one phone.
Whether this is a sensible move remains to be seen, as users (including yours truly) could be worried that Edge displays are vulnerable. But if the Galaxy Note 7 does sell well, it could be the key factor which might spell the end of the flat screen variant.
