T-Mobile Outage Knocks US Phones Into SOS Mode Nationwide

A nationwide T-Mobile outage knocked tens of thousands of phones in the US into “SOS only” mode on Monday afternoon, cutting off calls and texts for customers from Washington DC to Los Angeles. Reports started climbing on Downdetector at around 1:00 PM Pacific (4:00 PM ET) on 27 July and spiked roughly half an hour later, peaking above 64,000 in a single hour.

What the T-Mobile outage looked like

The symptom was consistent: the status bar switched from 5G to SOS, meaning the handset could still dial emergency services but nothing else. Complaints came in from nearly every major US metro, with Tom’s Guide logging reports across Florida, California, North Carolina, Washington, Minnesota, Louisiana and Hawaii. How-To Geek, whose own staff phones dropped to SOS, estimated more than 200,000 users were affected at the peak and noted the outage also hit MVNOs that ride on T-Mobile’s network.

Verizon and AT&T picked up Downdetector reports of their own during the same window, but those were almost certainly knock-on effects — T-Mobile subscribers unable to reach anyone, and other carriers’ customers unable to get through to T-Mobile lines. If you were on Verizon or AT&T and your call failed, the fault was at the other end.

By around 5:50 PM ET the count had fallen to roughly 40,000 and was still dropping, with service returning unevenly. An outage this size does not clear all at once, and some customers reported being offline for close to two hours.

T-Mobile’s response was the weakest part

Hours into a nationwide failure, T-Mobile had still not posted a public acknowledgement, and the company does not appear to operate a network status page — leaving customers to work out from Downdetector and social media whether the problem was their SIM, their phone, or the network. Support agents were replying individually and asking people to move to DMs.

The closest thing to an official line was the boilerplate the T-Mobile Help account began sending to customers, quoted by Tom’s Guide:

Thank you for reaching out. Our teams are actively working the reports of technical challenges impacting some customers. Any service impacts are in the process of being resolved and are our highest priority. We know how critical it is to stay connected, and every available resource is focused on resolving this as quickly as possible.

“Some customers” is doing a lot of work in a sentence written while 64,000 people were filing outage reports. No cause has been given, and this comes less than a week after a separate T-Mobile service disruption — a pattern worth watching if you are weighing a carrier switch. It also follows the Verizon international roaming outage earlier this month, another case where affected users learned more from each other than from their carrier.

What to do if your phone still shows SOS

  • Toggle airplane mode or restart the handset once reports start falling — devices often stay parked on a failed connection after the network recovers.
  • Turn on Wi-Fi calling in your phone’s network settings. It is worth trying because it bypasses the radio network, though it still runs through carrier infrastructure and is not guaranteed to help in every outage.
  • Use an internet messaging app — WhatsApp, Signal, RCS over Wi-Fi — for anything urgent while voice and text are down.
