Pixel 11 Spare Parts to Last Seven Years, EU Rules or Not

Google has said it will keep Pixel 11 spare parts available for seven years, matching the seven years of Android updates the line already ships with. The commitment was made at the Pixel 11 series launch event in India, reported by Android Authority, and it is said to apply in every market where the phones are sold, the United States included. That last part is where the promise actually earns something, because in Europe a seven-year parts supply is not a favour — it is already the law.

Where seven years of Pixel 11 spare parts is a promise, and where it’s a rule

The EU’s smartphone ecodesign regulation already forces the number. Regulation 2023/1670 requires manufacturers to make spare parts available to professional repairers and to end users themselves “until at least 7 years after the date of end of placement on the market” — a list that explicitly includes the battery, the display assembly, the back cover where it must come off to reach the battery, and the folding mechanism on foldables. It even sets delivery deadlines: five working days for the first five years, ten for the remaining two.

So for a Pixel 11 bought in Germany or Ireland, seven years of parts was guaranteed before Google said a word about it. For a Pixel 11 bought in the United States or India, where no equivalent rule exists, it rests entirely on the company choosing to do it. That is the real content of the announcement, and it is worth more than the headline number suggests.

Why it matters most for the battery

Parts availability matters least for the components that fail by accident and most for the one that degrades on a schedule. Android Authority notes that Pixel phones are rated for 1,000 charging cycles before the battery is effectively down to 80% of its original capacity, which for most owners arrives somewhere around year three. A seven-year update policy is close to worthless if the phone cannot hold a charge into year five and no replacement cell is available to fit it.

None of this is new for Google. The Pixel 8 generation in 2023 was the first to pair a seven-year parts commitment with its seven-year software promise, and the Pixel 11 line carries it forward. Google also sells genuine Pixel parts to owners through iFixit, so self-repair is a real option rather than a talking point. It sits alongside the EU energy-label durability and repairability grades Google now has to publish for the Pixel 11 series.

What Google has actually published

The update half of the promise is documented and checkable. Google’s own Pixel support page lists the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold among the devices that “will get updates for 7 years starting from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US”.

The parts half reached the public differently — as a remark at a launch event, relayed by one outlet, with GSMArena hedging its own write-up with the word “reportedly”. No Google blog post or support page stating seven years of Pixel 11 parts has surfaced, and Google’s published repair documentation is more conservative in what it guarantees: the authorised repair partner page says that service “is available for at least 3 years after Google stops production”, which is a floor on repair service rather than a statement about how long parts will exist.

The Pixel 8 precedent suggests Google means it. But American and Indian buyers are being asked to take on trust the same thing European buyers can point to a regulation for, and the fix is trivial: publish the seven-year parts figure on a support page the way the seven-year update figure is published. Until that happens, it is a stated intention rather than a commitment you could hold anyone to in year six.
