OnePlus 11R software support promise

Update: OnePlus has reached out to AndroidPure to clarify that it will only provide 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security updates for the OnePlus 11R. The original story follows.

But more importantly, the OnePlus 11R will get 4 years of OS updates. In case you aren’t aware, the phone ships with OxygenOS 13 based on Android 13 out of the box. So, 4 years of OS updates would mean that the smartphone will be eligible for Android 14, 15, 16 and 17.

OnePlus 11R software support

Here’s a brief recap of the device’s specs. The OnePlus 11R is equipped with a 6.74-inches 1.5K+ AMOLED screen with a 120Hz Refresh Rate, an in-display optical fingerprint scanner, and is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, an Adreno 730 GPU, 8GB/16GB LPDDR5x RAM, and 128GB/256GB UFS 3.1 storage. The 5G handset packs a 5,000 mAh battery, supports 100W SuperVOOC fast charging via a USB Type-C port The main camera array on the phone comprises a 50MP primary lens, an 8MP Ultra-wide angle lens, and a MP Macro Sensor. The front camera on the phone is a 16MP snapper.

This does come as a surprise as two years ago OnePlus had promised 3 years of OS updates for its devices. So an additional year of providing support seems like a sweet deal. Samsung and Google are the other Android OEMs who offer similar long term support for their mobile phones. The Apple iPhone still remains the device to beat, as the Cupertino-based company tends to release OS updates to its devices for 5+ years, including major OS updates.

Still, 5 years of security updates and 4 major OS updates is pretty rare for Android phones, so we view it as a positive sign. Now it is up to the company to fulfill the OnePlus 11R software support promise, which is a question only time can answer.
