MIUI 12 has been announced globally by Xiaomi, a month after it was launched in China. And here’s all you need to know about the new features it brings.
MIUI 12 has a new animation rendering engine with improved animations, physics, and better feedback. It also adds colour blending and real-time Gaussian blur. The animations appear smooth in the demo videos.
Xiaomi says that the new rendering engine in MIUI brings a G2 continuity curve, that reduces the gaps (black border) between the edges of the display and the bezels.

The weather app in MIUI 12 will dynamically change corresponding to the outside weather. Basically if it’s sunny outside, the app’s interface mirrors it, and other changes like cloudy, overcast, rain, snow etc are reflected accordingly.
The interface of MIUI 12 has been overhauled for better visualization. It appears more polished, and has graphs and text data for battery, storage space, internet usage, etc. The screenshots do make it seem like the UI is cleaner.
The latest version of the custom Android skin from Xiaomi brings an all new homescreen, lockscreen and always-on display experience. The company terms it “Super Wallpapers”, and these are Mars themed wallpapers.
The operating system comes with a built-in universal casting tool.
MIUI now supports floating windows for multitasking. You can use it to open or close an app’s window in a single tap.
Ultra Battery Saver
MIUI 12 comes with Ultra Battery Saver, which the company claims will provide 5 times longer battery life on standby when there’s only 5% power left. It does so by restricting the power consumption, background activity, decreasing the screen brightness and switches to the dark theme.
Dark Mode works universally for all third party apps in MIUI 12.
The OS comes with a new Permission Notification feature that will alert you when the camera, microphone or location is being used in the background. MIUI 12 displays a bright notification icon on the status bar.
The new version of MIUI offers better permission controls that let you decide whether to allow an app to access your contacts, call history, camera, location, microphone and storage.
You may choose to always allow the app, allow while using the app, notify, or deny rights on a per-app basis.
Erase Location Metadata
MIUI 12 can delete the location data from the metadata of photos that you share, to protect your privacy.
MIUI 12 now supports 80 languages.
