Apple’s first OLED iPad mini may still be stuck at a 60Hz refresh rate. A Korean tipster claims the iPad mini 8’s domestic production units use a fixed 60Hz LTPS OLED panel. That would rule out the 120Hz ProMotion display found on the iPad Pro. This is an unconfirmed rumor, and it comes from a single source.

The claim comes from yeux1122, who posts on the Korean blogging platform Naver, and was relayed by MacRumors.
There have been mentions of 120Hz in some overseas reports, but the domestic production quantity has already been confirmed to be LTPS at 60Hz.

Two hedges matter here. MacRumors describes this tipster’s record as hit-and-miss, and the same account made an identical 60Hz claim back in July 2026. As of October 8, no official word from Apple has surfaced on the panel.
What LTPS versus LTPO would mean for buyers
The distinction is not just marketing language. Apple’s iPad Pro models use two-stack LTPO OLED panels, which scale dynamically between 10Hz and 120Hz. LTPS OLED panels are typically locked to a single refresh rate and tend to be dimmer.
If the rumor holds, mini buyers would get a panel-technology upgrade without the scrolling smoothness. The current iPad mini 7 uses a 60Hz LCD, so moving to OLED would still bring better contrast and black levels. That is a real improvement, and it is the fair counterpoint to the complaint below.
The complaint is still legitimate. Apple put ProMotion on the base iPhone 17, and it has shipped 120Hz on the iPad Pro for years. Holding the smaller tablet at a fixed 60Hz looks like a deliberate segmentation choice rather than a technical limit. Anyone upgrading from a 120Hz iPhone will notice the difference the moment they scroll.
Other iPad mini 8 expectations
Separate leaks, not tied to this tipster, point to a few other changes. None of these are confirmed either.
- Chip: A20 Pro
- Front camera: moved from the portrait edge to the landscape edge
- Audio: redesigned speakers
- Durability: water resistance
When it might launch
Apple has not announced a date. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, relayed by MacRumors, says the October 13 event centers on home products. The iPad mini 8 is not expected to appear there. MacRumors’ own sources point to a separate event in the final week of October. That matches earlier reporting that Apple plans a second October wave covering Macs and the iPad mini.
