Google says the Google Photos bug that froze the app after editing a picture has been fixed. The fix ships in app version 7.94.0.988717361, so the only step left for affected users is installing the update.
What Was Going Wrong
The problem surfaced roughly a week before Google confirmed a fix was ready. After using the editing tools in Google Photos, the app would lock up completely and stop responding to further input.
That is an awkward failure for a photo editor. A frozen screen blocks everything else you were trying to do in the app, not just the edit itself.
Google first shared workarounds while confirming a proper fix was in development. It then came back to say the fix itself had shipped.
What Google Said
Google gave Android Authority the following statement.
We’ve rolled out a fix for this issue. It is available now in the latest version of the Google Photos app (version 7.94.0.988717361).
How to Make Sure Google Photos Has the Fix
This arrives as an ordinary app update. Nothing changes on your phone until the Play Store installs the new build.
If Google Photos is still freezing for you, check the Play Store for a pending Google Photos update and install it. Make sure you are on 7.94.0.988717361 or newer.
Auto-updates make this easy to overlook. If auto-updates are off, the fix will not arrive until you install it yourself.
What the Statement Does Not Cover
Google’s statement confirms the fix and the version number, and stops there. It does not explain what caused the freeze, or which devices and Android versions were worst hit.
That is fairly normal for a bug of this size, but it leaves one open question. Without a public cause, there is no way for users to tell whether a future freeze is the same fault returning.
