Final Cut Camera Adds Variable Aperture Control on iPhone 18 Pro

Apple’s Final Cut Camera app now supports variable aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro. The update arrived on September 29 as a free download, timed to the release of iOS 27. Apple has also rebuilt the app’s interface, while iOS 27 itself adds monitoring tools aimed at people shooting video for a living.

Variable aperture on iPhone 18 Pro

The headline change is aperture control itself. On the iPhone 18 Pro, Final Cut Camera lets you set the aperture rather than leaving it fixed. That also opens the door to aperture-priority and shutter-priority shooting, where you lock one value and let the camera handle the other.

For anyone shooting seriously on an iPhone, that changes the order of decisions. Depth of field becomes something you choose in the moment, not something you approximate afterwards.

Cinematic mode works on ordinary footage now

Cinematic mode is no longer limited to clips shot in Cinematic mode. It now applies to regular video, and it works with ProRes and Apple Log files. Focus points and depth of field can be adjusted afterwards in Final Cut Pro, which is a separate app from the free Final Cut Camera.

That is still a meaningful workflow change. You no longer have to decide at the moment of capture whether a shot needs the cinematic treatment.

A rebuilt interface and new overlays

Apple describes the app as redesigned from the ground up. The company says that brings easier access to shutter angle, ISO and white balance, plus a new set of customizable overlays.

  • Exposure overlays: False color and clipping indicators for judging exposure at a glance
  • Focus peaking: Improved, with a sensitivity control
  • Tally light: A new on-screen indicator showing when recording is underway
  • Clean viewfinder: A two-finger tap clears the interface so you can watch the shot

Monitoring tools in iOS 27

iOS 27 adds professional monitoring on top of the app changes. Apple lists an RGB Parade and a histogram for evaluating color and exposure. There is also clean SDI output through an HDMI-to-SDI converter, plus genlock offset compensation for multi-camera setups.

Those last two are narrow features aimed at studio and live production work. They matter if you are feeding an iPhone into a switcher alongside dedicated cameras.

Availability

The Final Cut Camera update is free and available now. Apple ties the variable aperture control specifically to the iPhone 18 Pro. The monitoring additions arrive with iOS 27 itself.
