Galaxy S27 Exynos Models Could Get a New M2700 Modem, Report Says

Exynos versions of the Galaxy S27 and S27+ will reportedly use a new Samsung modem called the M2700, according to The Elec. Its unnamed industry sources say the chip improves power efficiency and data speeds. If that holds up, it targets a real battery-life problem, because modem drain adds up whenever your phone is on cellular.

Everything here comes from The Elec’s report. No Samsung statement on the M2700 had surfaced as of publication, and The Elec’s report includes no benchmark figures.

Why the Galaxy S27 modem report matters for battery life

Exynos models of the Galaxy S26 use Samsung’s Shannon 5410 modem. “The existing Shannon 5410 lagged behind competing products in idle power consumption and under standard power measurement conditions,” an industry official told The Elec.

The M2700 apparently fares better. The Elec says the new modem reportedly received favorable evaluations in internal testing by Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) business, unlike its predecessor.

Exynos modem efficiency has been a long-running complaint. A fix would be welcome, but internal test results from unnamed sources aren’t proof. The real answer comes when retail S27 units ship and get tested on battery life.

Same 4nm process, revised design

According to The Elec, the M2700 stays on 4nm, the same process as the Shannon 5410. The efficiency and speed gains come from design and software changes instead. The official cites voltage adjustments among those changes. The chip’s die area also shrinks by about 4% through an optical shrink.

The modem moves from 3GPP Release 17 to Release 18. The Elec says that brings improved non-terrestrial network (NTN) capability for satellite connections. That doesn’t confirm any specific satellite feature on the S27, though.

There’s a branding change too. Per The Elec’s source, Samsung has dropped the Shannon modem name in favor of an M-series lineup.

Which Galaxy S27 models would get the M2700

The M2700 pairs only with Exynos chips, so the model split matters. SamMobile reports that Samsung plans to use the Exynos 2700 in the Galaxy S27 and S27+ in most countries globally. The S27 Pro may also use it in some regions. The S27 Ultra is likely to stay Snapdragon-only, per SamMobile.

Neither report names the markets. For context, SamMobile says the S26 and S26+ used the Exynos 2600 everywhere except China and North America. The Elec says US S26 models used the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. If that pattern repeats, US buyers likely won’t see this modem.

We covered the chip side earlier, when the Exynos 2700 was reportedly in production with the S27 Ultra’s chip still undecided. A Korean tipster has also claimed the Galaxy S27 could launch in January.

What comes after the M2700

The Elec says the next modem, the M2800, will be made on a 2nm process. It’s expected to finish development in 2027 and pair with the Exynos 2800 in the Galaxy S28 series, due in 2028. Meanwhile, Samsung is reportedly shifting its 4nm capacity toward HBM base dies.
