Samsung Wallet: USDC Transfers Coming to US Galaxy Phones

Samsung Wallet is getting stablecoin transfers in the United States. Samsung says the feature will launch for eligible US Galaxy users starting in the last week of October, covering 82 million devices at launch. USDC is the only stablecoin supported to begin with. It is not live yet, despite some coverage describing it as already available.

Two ways to send money

The first path is the conventional crypto one. You can send USDC from Samsung Wallet to a compatible crypto wallet internationally, which Samsung says happens within seconds and without transfer fees.

The second path is the more interesting one for ordinary users. You can send USDC to a qualifying bank account in more than 60 countries. The funds are converted automatically and arrive in the recipient’s local currency. The person on the other end does not need a crypto wallet, and does not need to know that crypto was involved at all.

Every transfer has to be authorised with biometrics on a registered Galaxy device. That is a sensible gate for a feature that moves money across borders. It protects the initiation step, though, not the destination address you typed.

Who actually holds the coins

Samsung’s pitch is explicitly aimed at people who have no interest in crypto mechanics.

“Sending money abroad should feel as convenient as using the wallet already on your phone. We’re bringing USDC transfers into Samsung Wallet so eligible Galaxy users can get started without installing another app or managing private keys themselves.”

— Woncheol Chai, EVP and Head of the Digital Wallet Team, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, Samsung Electronics

That last clause is the part worth reading twice. Not managing private keys yourself means somebody else manages them. Bastion, a licensed stablecoin custodian overseen by US financial regulators, powers the cross-border framework. Bastion has brought in Coinbase as official sub-custodian, with USDC safeguarded in Coinbase Prime Vault. Solana and Sui provide the blockchain network support.

That is a custodial arrangement, and the tradeoff is real. You get a familiar app, a biometric prompt and no seed phrase to lose. In exchange, your balance sits with regulated third parties rather than under your own keys. For most people sending money to family, that is an acceptable deal and arguably the safer one. For anyone who uses crypto specifically to avoid custodians, it is the opposite of the point.

One more caution, on fees. Samsung’s “no transfer fees” language attaches to sending USDC to a compatible third-party crypto wallet. The announcement does not itemise what happens on the bank-account route, where funds get converted into local currency. Currency conversion is rarely free. Treat the whole flow as costless only once Samsung spells that out.

Where this fits, and what comes next

Samsung frames the launch as the next chapter of its work with Coinbase. Samsung Pay was previously added as a payment option inside the Coinbase app, and Coinbase One benefits became accessible through Samsung Wallet. It also follows a steady run of Samsung Wallet expansions, from Digital Key support for Cadillac EVs to the company’s first US credit card.

Samsung says more is planned, without committing to dates. The list includes paying with stablecoins online and tapping an eligible Galaxy device to pay in store. Expansion beyond the US is described as following regulatory developments in each country. In practice, that means nobody should expect a quick rollout elsewhere. For now, the only firm date is the last week of October, in the US.
