Googlebook’s Best Phone Features Need an Android 17 Handset

Googlebook’s headline trick is how tightly it pairs with your Android phone. That pairing comes with a requirement that is easy to miss: the phone has to be running Android 17. Android Authority found the detail in a Googlebook reviewer’s guide. It applies to several of the cross-device features Google has been demonstrating.

Which Googlebook features need Android 17

Google says the Android 17 requirement covers four of the phone-integration features:

  • Task continuity — picking up on the laptop what you started on the phone
  • Shared file and storage access — reaching your phone’s files from the laptop
  • Phone app streaming — running a phone app on the Googlebook’s screen
  • Synced notifications — phone alerts appearing on the laptop

That list covers much of what makes a Googlebook different from an ordinary laptop. Strip it out and you still have a machine that runs Android apps. The integration story Google has been selling is largely gone, though.

Does your phone qualify?

Android Authority characterises the install base as relatively few Android phones having Android 17 right now. That is worth attributing rather than overstating, because the picture varies a lot by brand.

  • Google Pixel — generally on the newest Android release, so the safest pairing
  • Samsung — the latest foldables shipped with Android 17-based One UI 9, and stable One UI 9 is reaching last year’s flagships; mid-range and older-flagship Galaxy owners are still waiting
  • Xiaomi, Motorola, OnePlus — only limited Android 17 rollouts so far
  • Brand-new mid-rangers — some are still launching on Android 16, including the POCO F9 series

Samsung’s position complicates any blanket claim that most phones miss out. If you own a current Galaxy flagship or foldable, you may already be covered.

Owners of a Galaxy A-series phone, or of a Xiaomi or OnePlus device, should check their Android version first. Do that before you factor cross-device features into a Googlebook purchase. Our coverage of One UI 9 reaching the Galaxy S25 and 2025 foldables tracks where Samsung has got to.

Some apps won’t stream at all

There is a second limit that no Android version fixes. Google says apps with DRM-protected video or sensitive content, such as banking apps, cannot be streamed from the phone to the laptop. A privacy screen appears in place of the app instead.

That restriction is not unusual. Samsung DeX and other screen-mirroring tools apply similar limits for content-protection reasons. It is still a gap between the demo and daily use. Streaming a banking app is exactly the kind of errand people would run from a laptop.

The buyer’s problem here

Google is marketing deep phone integration as a core reason to pick a Googlebook over a regular laptop. A large share of the Android install base cannot use those features yet, and nothing about the laptop itself changes that. The gate sits on the phone, where Google controls the schedule least.

For a reader, the sequence matters. Confirm your phone is on Android 17, or that its update is close, before paying for a Googlebook on the strength of the continuity features. If it is not, you are buying a laptop and waiting on your phone maker for the rest. Our earlier look at Googlebook pricing and specs covers the hardware side.
